Poor families are more likely to be obese, a health minister has said.
Anna Soubry said children were suffering because of an ‘an abundance of bad food’ in their homes.
She also said it was ‘deeply ironic’ that in the past poorer youngsters used to be ‘skinny runts’ because they were so malnourished.
The minister said it was ‘almost possible’ to guess a person’s background by their size.
It is not the first time she has risked embarrassing the Government with her frank remarks. Last September, weeks after taking up the post, she backed assisted-suicide and said it was ‘appalling’ people had to go abroad to end their lives.

Not sure how this is really "news" as its common fucking sense that poor people will eat that 50cent box of mac and cheese over those $8 worth of veggies. Some of the comments are worth reading for facepalm material.

Well it's not entirely wrong. Like for example I can buy a 2-3 liter soda in the store for 1 dollar, while the juice equivalent would run from 3-8 depending on the brand and type of juice and how much of the drink is actually juice(10% as opposed to 100%)

Water is free. I was raised in a trailer park in Alabama, poor as hell. Everyone I knew around me that was poor (kid-wise) was skinny as hell. This is a newer problem because our food stamp programs pay for soda and junk food. Regulate that shit better and it would help this problem. We never had drinks in the house besides my adopted mom's Mountain Dew which I was not allowed to touch. I drank water, ate pasta, and played outside all day.

It's mentioned, but the article glosses over the prep time, cook time, cleanup time, and actual knowledge and skill required to cook well.

The actual cost of the ingredients is only a small portion of the effort required, cooking is work. It takes time, knowledge, practice, creativity (esp. if you have kids)...

Fast food/junk food is much more about convenience than price.

$7 per person at McDonalds is just lulzy. They just have 4 value meals, and none of them (big mac, cheeseburger, 6-piece mcnuggets) are over $6 for mediums or smalls.

Empty calories etc. The sugar content is similar, though OJ has more nutrients. The problem ends up being that it isn't very filling and it's easy to drink more than you would have ate.
