Dolphin 4.0 (now with wifi support!)

For those who don't know, Dolphin is a really awesome Wii and Gamecube emulator. We have just released version 4.0 today.

    https://dolphin-emu.org/blog/2013/09...-announcement/

Lots of cool stuff, including wifi support (you can play with people on real wiis), greatly improved audio, balance board support, and more.

    Check it out!

YAY I <3 Dolphin. I hope the improved audio makes a huge difference for some particular games. Maybe Sonic Colors will run better with this new version.

99.9% of games now have perfect audio with HLE, including, i believe, sonic colors

You kinda make it sound like you're one of the developers with the "we." (Don't know if you are, so no offense or anything if you actually are.)

I remember when this emulator was pretty crappy, and could barely run gamecube games. It's amazing seeing all of the changes and improvements it's had over the years.

Really? Then let me say thanks. You guys rule, this is easily one of my most used emulators at the moment. About to test Ikaruga, I could never get the game to run stable past the 1st stage.

Anyway I can import my controller config settings over?

Yes. Assuming you're on windows, controller settings are saved to User/Config/WiimoteNew.ini and GCPadNew.ini. Profiles are in User/Config/Profiles. Previously the user folder was stored next to the exe, so grab the files from there. They are now stored in C:\Users\name\Documents\Dolphin Emulator\ so copy them over there. There's more info here.

Straight up in the Dolphin Emulator folder with Profile and all? Ok I better make back ups.. lol

Edit: Ok since you're here might as well ask. How come when I try to config the graphic settings to my optimal/favorite settings it NEVER saves or keeps it that way? Even now.

No, put them in the same folders you got them from. So gc controller config should be at C:\Users\name\Documents\Dolphin Emulator\Config\GCPadNew.ini

Fuck it never mind, just gonna see if editing the ini file works. One thing's for sure, gonna have to save via memory cards on the old emulator, my save states are boned.

lol I tried to start over with a fresh reinstall and for some reason now there's no User or config settings anywhere in the new directory. I give up, sticking to 3.0.

Edit: For some reason it still stores all the config settings in documents despite installing it in a different directory. This has been too confusing, this is why I hate going to a new version.

Since you're a developer, just chiming in to say thanks! I've used dolphin quite a bit over the last couple years and id love to donate, any place best to do that?

Also, are you part of the group working on the Android version?

Got my settings back to normal and finally ran something on Dolphin 4.0. Sonic Colors is running like garbage now and the audio is actually worse. I don't mean to be a downer man.. but I am just gonna stick with the setup I had with 3.0, it didn't have these problems. I don't even know how this is possible, pretty much all my settings are the same as I had them in 3.0 so I know I am not making it work harder but yet it's unplayable.

The project as a whole does not accept donations.

    Nope.

4.0 is faster than 3.5 was, but still slower than 3.0. 3.0 was fast because it used a lot of terrible hacks that didn't work well, and caused all kinds of problems. There's not really much that can be done about this. Making a more accurate emulator will naturally result in it being slower. Unfortunately that means you'll need a better cpu to get the same speed as you did in older versions.

If you are using an nvidia gpu, you should switch the graphics backend to OpenGL, and enable vertex streaming hack, under the hacks tab. That will gives a very big speed up. If you have an ati video card, switching to d3d9 will likely give a modest speed up, but it tends to have more bugs than d3d11 or OpenGL, so ymmv.

Audio sounds worse because it now runs with proper timing, so if the emulator runs at less than 100% speed, it will stutter. You can alleviate this by using the OpenAL audio backend, which has time stretching. It works well, but introduces a small, but noticable amount of latency to the asudio.

May be interesting for a better online smash bros experience.

Actually, netplay has been improving a ton lately, and is generally considered to be way the hell better than playing online on a wii. Not only because of the usual dolphin improvements, but there's also way less latency. If you're interested, there's a pretty big group of people who play melee online with netplay pretty often. They even do tournaments every other week. They're at #dolphin-ssbm on rizon and http://globalmelee.com/ if you want to check it out.
