BHAI Parenting: Potty Edition

Ok so my son turned 2 in December and he's showing all the signs that he's ready for potty training (doesn't like being wet, can pull his own pants up and down, follow simple instructions, tells me when he craps or is currently crapping his pants) except he's scared of the toilet. Even with an adorable character potty seat on it he wont sit on it while its open. I would just use a normal potty but they use a toilet and potty seat at day care so he's gonna have to get used to it eventually.

best i can think of: thoroughly clean the toilet, then hang out in the bathroom with him for a while. hold him and show him the toilet, maybe flush it after a while. let him poke it and prod it, see it's just a thing. answer his questions, if hes got any. explain it's just water and he won't fit, if he's scared of being sucked away. if he's scared of the noise, show him the inside of the upper chamber. maybe hold his hand while he uses it for a while? idk, not a dad, but those are some things i'd try.

This is actually a big thing in helping him understand what it's for.

My daughter isn't quite there year (she'll be 2 in April), but she already says "poop" when she poops (or farts..close enough). And she now also points to the toilet and says "poop!"

As bane said, I also let her play with the toilet handle, though she doesn't have the muscle strength yet to actually flush it, but she tries.

[edit] take it with a grain of salt since I haven't started training yet, but have you looked into any books to give strategies? I do know that kids need consistency, so find a method you like the sound of and try to stick to it for awhile. Also, don't stress if he takes longer than whatever method claims (I remember reading something on Babycenter where it was like TRAIN IN 5 DAYS!...bullshit.) If he sees you stressed, he'll be stressed.

Did you hit him with a water bottle yet? Hit him with it every time he pisses or shits himself and tell him that the water bottle is scared of toilets and that the toilet will protect him

Flushing was the scariest thing for my two girls and they prolonged it as long as we allowed. Eventually we just let them go around the house diaperless. After passing themself a bit they lost all fear of the toilet and high tailed it to the toilet. Flushing was hard for them still but they would rather face the toilet than piss themself. Now if your son likes getting dirty and thinks it's funny to be an indoor sprinkler this method may not work. But sooner the better cause fuck the cost of diapers. Also there may be an aiming issues. Hell I know most grown guys still suck at aiming. Trying throwing a cheerio in the water and have him aim for it and make it a game.

Get one of those little plastic kiddie toilets that you have to manually empty the bowl, stepping stone. Just dont get one that sings when they open the lid or sit on it.

This is dangerous. You don't want her recklessly conflating farts with poop, or the day will come when she'll be older, out and about, and she'll feel a rumbling and won't know which she has to do—nonetheless, she'll take the chance, tragically shitting herself in public when she thought all she'd let out would be a fart.

Don't let that happen.

Third'd. My duaghter will be 2 in April as well. She says stinky (more like seekee) instead of poop and pulls at her diaper, then runs away at mach 2.

Sit there with him until he drops the bomb. Even if it takes an hour. When it finally happens. Party Time!!!! Make it a huge deal. Treats, hats, etc. Do the same thing if he goes on his own or when asked to. 2 weeks of this, and should be set in stone. Family did this with myself, brother and 4 cousins.
