Lionsgate has signed Michael Gracey to direct an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series “Naruto.”

The studio is in negotiations for the film rights to the “Naruto” series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, first published in 1997. The manga, which has sold more than 200 million copies in print, follows adolescent ninja Naruto Uzumaki, who dreams of becoming the village ninja, the community’s protector and leader.

Avi Arad is producing through his Arad Productions. Erik Feig, Geoff Shaveitz and Kelly O’Malley will oversee for the studio.

To be honest, it shouldn't matter. The Narutoverse is not Japan. And while most names/abilities reflect such JPness if you don't translate, I'd put it more on Kishi writing "what he knows" rather than going all Kubo with random Spanish and German like he does in Bleach.

Naruto: Evolution

The nerdy highschooler Naruto is bullied by the hotshot Sasuke who all the girls love. There's this myth about a 9-tailed fox that attacked their town ages ago and these cultist guys known as Zabuza, Itachi and Danzo are trying to revive the 9-Tails. Naruto, under the training of his Grandpa Jiraiya (who dies after a really bad stroke...you know... cause he's an old perv) and guidance from his school councilor Iruka, goes to stop them, ONLY TO FIND OUT HE'S THE 9-TAILS ALL ALONG!!!!! 9-Tails gets free, they fight, Sasuke tries to help but gets slapped around like a little bitch in front of all the girls, Naruto finally masters the Kameha...Rasengan and uses it to win. Sakura falls in love with him, Hinata is never even mentioned/shown.
