I'm curious too. My initial reaction when I heard the movie was being made was that it would absolutely butcher the books, because theres just no way such an anti-catholicism story would fly.

But the trailers look pretty good, so I'm keeping my hopes up.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm making it a point to ignore any and all publicity because they're really pouring a lot of money into the marketing; I'd rather not allow the hype to reach unrealistic highs.

I'm gonna see it tomorrow, and am pretty excited about it regardless of how mangled it is relative to the book. I think they can dance around the whole church aspect for the first movie, but it's gonna be really hard to warp the second and third installments of the series, if they ever get made. I'm sure it'll be fuel for a good thread.

The first and second installment apparently are riding on the success of this movie. If it flops, there is no chance the other two will be made. If it is a huge success they'll find a way to edit the anti-Christan story line. They've done it to Da Vinci Code they can sure as well do it to other book based movies.

    42% at rottentomatoes.com. I'd probably save your money unless you're a fan.

EDIT. Guess it was boosted to 44, here is the page:

i usually give more weight to the user % than the critic %. Especially if it's a comedy, action, fantasy, or horror.

I can see the second book being worked around, but the third book is pretty damn confrontational and the religious aspects are critical to the story, lol.

Still holding out hope regardless of reviews.

Obligatory "It won't be as good as the books" post.

Its been a while since I read the books, but I am kinda looking forward to seeing the movie. Personally I always think its a bad idea to condense a book into a 2-3 hour movie, but I hope it does well.

It's getting shit from the churches, which I'm not surprised. For once, can they not care? How about not being bitches and just let people see what they want without you publicaly anouncing you aren't happy with a movie being made. Shut the fuck up.

If they make the first two good enough to make people want the third, then they'll be able to make it no matter how controversial it might be. Once they've already got the first two out of the way, people will riot if they don't make the third.. and they'll riot if they do. It's a good position to be in because then they can just do whatever the hell they wanted to do in the first place without worrying about who might get pissed off... since people will get pissed whether they make it or not.

I read that they really didn't show the relationship between a person and their dæmon very well. If that's the case I'll be really sad, the emotional bond there is a huge part of the story line. If they just make them seem like pets instead of part of a person's soul it's just not going to mean as much.

You realize that humanists, etc say anything and everything about anything remotely religious. I don't see why they shouldn't say anything after crap they get from everything else.

Agreed. Only thing to trust critics on imo is drama. I'll take a critic's advice over a random person any day on a drama, but for all the above listed genres I'd much rather have the widespread opinion. Although users tend to overrate comedies, horror, and action while underrating fantasy.

    Re: Golden Compass Reviews?

if you have read the book, imo the movie just doesnt cut it and i found myself counting the faults rather than enjoying my $10 excursion

the 2 things that killed me were the intro and outro, neither were close to the actual novel
i can only hope they do better with the subtle knife

Book movies are a lot easier to watch if you temporarily suspend your knowledge of the book to enjoy the movie for what the movie is.
