Widescreen FFXI issue

I dislike FFXI in Widescreen, makes characters look fat etc, I have 2 different Vista machines, 1 I set ratio to 800x600 and it defaults to a 4x3 (normal) look which I like, my newer and also widescreen PC stays wide even though I pick 800x600, any pointers? =/

Make sure you have the one in the FFXI config set to the same as the one you are opening windower with, i think.

Either I've forgotten where that's set, or I'm blind. In FFXI config it says 800x600, background res is 1024x1024.

Should be an aspect ratio slider under Config -> Misc2. iirc.

idk, both of the games say 4:3, all of their settings are identical, both are on 19" monitor. The 1 computer POL and FFXI loads like it's 4:3 (monitor is still 16:9), the other computer the POL and FFXI screen load 16:9.

Menu -> Config -> Misc.2 -> Click/select the aspect ratio slider and hit the right arrow key until the characters look how you want them to.

For the record, PC monitors are 16:10 ratio, not 16:9.

Ok, after rereading the OP, and it sounds more like your video card driver settings is setting itself up to stretch non-native resolutions to cover the whole screen.

On an nVidia card, you just knock-up the nVidia Control Panel under Window's Control Panel, open up the Display tree view, select Change flat panel scaling, and select scaling with fixed-aspect ratio. That'll make the game display in the proper aspect ratio to the full vertical height of your monitor, leaving bars on the sides in its place.

No idea how to do that on an ATI though, but I'm assuming it's easily found under its driver settings.

wow thanks, they're both nvidia, and even though my 1st computer settings were not set to aspect-ratio, clicking it on this PC fixed it.

Just change the aspect ratio in the game..
then you'll get the benefit of 16:10 and it'll look normal >___>
