It's a silly situation, but you're stretching it to compare it to McCain's retarded gas tax holiday plan. They have an agreement with the city to fill up at the city's pumps, they weren't just walking into the local BP station and flashing the "I don't pay no tax" card. Sounds more like an oversight (a stupid one, that's for sure) by the city that they weren't being charged tax than an intentional evil plan to avoid paying it.

Source? Your precious angry editorial doesn't say anything of the sort, in fact, it specifically mentions "tax-free gas" rather than just "free gas".

Edit: After finding an actual primary source (wonder of wonders, what an idea), I see zero indication that they're getting flat-out free gas. It specifically says that they've charged up around $10k in costs so far, and that there's a contract in the works for reimbursement, which is pretty standard fare. They'd need a contract to get "free" gas as well, or it'd be theft. In other words, you're twisting the fact that they haven't signed the reimbursement contract yet into an assumption that they won't, which is a pretty big assumption with no real basis other than your own hatred for anyone on the left.

It'd be nice if you actually replied to what I actually wrote rather than your inept interpretation of it. I didn't say that it didn't happen, I said that editorials tend to make bad primary sources. Primary sources about a newsworthy event should be about the event itself, not someone's opinions about the event. It'd be alright if the editorial had some sources itself, but of course, it doesn't, so we're left looking for our own.

Politicians always act like tax rates and government revenues follow a straight-line model, when anyone with a high school education in economics could tell you it's a curve with a maximum point. There's so many factors in determining that maximum point that any kind of dogmatic "Lowering taxes will increase revenue, always!" or "Raising taxes will increase revenue, always!" statement is going to be wrong fairly often.

In this case, eliminating federal taxes for 3 months is nothing but a PR ploy. The actual federal gas tax for consumers (non-diesel) is $0.184, which works out to a little under $4 each time you fill up a 20 gallon tank. Assuming you fill up once a week, that's a little under $50 that McCain saved you over 3 months. A nice little bit of change, but it's not going to be the difference between going on that cross-country road trip or not, and a 3 month holiday isn't going to inspire companies to hire more truckers or change their distribution patterns. In short, it won't make two shits worth of difference in the ways that matter, but it'll make him look great in the eyes of people clamoring for lower gas prices, which is apparently all he cares about.

Edit for Kuya: In case it wasn't 100% clear from my explanation, McCain proposed eliminating the 18.4 cent federal gas tax between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

You could read the article where it specifically says that the contract had not been signed yet, thus they were not allowed to "charge" any of the gas yet. So yes, it is free gas.
