Where can I find FFXI font? (either the official one or "Brandson/Emiko")

Does anyone know where to get or possibly what already existing font FFXI uses for in-game chatlog text? Either the official one or Brandson/Emiko versions are fine as they're both instantly recognizable by the players. I need a version that I can use in Photoshop and just for personal use.

you could extract it from the .dat file probably - the font is in 1-119-51.dat - and is 'named' font moji (font face)

I'm a complete n00b when it comes to messing with .dats, how do I do that?

Look in your "Program Files" and go to Playonline -> Final Fantasy XI -> and you'll have a list of folders. #-#-# the first number is the the "Rom Folder" open it then the second number is another numbered folder. after opening, the last folder is a .txt file. Drag it to wherever to save and then drag the new-font/dat to that exact place.

So it would be Rom1 (This Folder on my computer is just shown as "Rom" without a number. Opposed to the others that say Rom#) Folder (119) - File 51~ for what Amele Said

she's looking to extract the font. - it's harder and requires some tools. I know that the FFXI Mod Community website used to have a pretty good tutorial and should still be hosting most of the tools.

I don't know how active the community is anymore though.

what I was attempting to give you was ultimately a *.bmp of the font file. with the right software you can then convert that to a .ttf (although this software can be expensive) or you can just the .bmp file directly in a copy paste manner.

here's the deal: fonts are functionally impossible to control from an IP standpoint (since it's nearly impossible to prove real uniqueness) so companies are very careful about releasing their proprietary fonts. once the .ttf or other font file gets into the wild the company basically loses control over the font and that's "bad" from a corporate copyright/IP control standpoint.

I agree it's dumb as shit. but a good font takes alot of work and if it's part of your brand then you don't want to give it away and dilute your brand.

right but that's why SE doesn't make the font available. once it's out period it's out for commercial and private use.

Short answer: The font does not exist as a font file. It exists as an image imbedded into the .DAT that was previously mentioned. If you want it as a true font file, you will have to make it yourself, as I don't believe that anyone has made one yet.

Also, you can extract the .bmp image of the font using POL Utils. Just open up the image, right click, and select Save As...

This is relevant to my interests. I actually tried making a FF11 font a while back, but decided it wasn't worth the trouble for what I had in mind, and gave up. But working from memory, I encountered the following issues:

You'll have to deal with the compression artifacts somehow. The font is stored as a DirectX texture, and as such is compressed. Obviously the game does something to make it look nice and clean but I don't know what. Also, you might have to re-order it, since the font is in JIS-X-208 order, and the kanji order in unicode is totally different (since unicode compressed the entire Chinese, Korean, and Japanese symbol set into one set, the so-called CJK characters). Because SJIS is a superset of JIS-X-208, you can go to the Unicode reference page, poke around in their FTP site, and somewhere find a document that maps betwen SJIS and unicode. Then it's just a matter of writing a simple program to use this to rearrange your font. Of course if you don't actually need any of the Japanese characters there's no need to bother with any of this.

Complete with transparency. Turning this into a font would be a major pain in the ass since the resolution is so tiny. For quick photoshop jobs thou this should do the trick.

Oh wow, that would be perfect if it were in a higher resolution. I think I'm just going to resort to typing out what I need in-game, frapsing and then blowing it up in Photoshop. It'll probably be the closest I can get if maybe a little grainy.

that's the full size of the actual texture the game uses.

obviously it's doing some scale up work (it's a dxt3 file in original format).
