WTS is this? Autocomplete on Google?

So yeah, this just popped up later today. I didnt install anything, and it wasnt like this, this afternoon/morning. Also, yahoo, msn and others dont have this, I also didnt try it on firefox (this is on IE), but i did disable all addons and such, nothing in add/remove, and its still there.

I want it gone, and it to be using the built in IE autocomplete.

I think that google occasionally rolls out new features that are in testing so that only certain random people get them? Like I remember the autocomplete from a few months ago on my work PC in Windows, but then it went away; now it is back, and I don't think it was there earlier today. But I never got it on my home computer in Linux.

I suspect it'll end up optional, it's probably google being 'smart' and forcing users to test it.

Complain to them, while their service might be free, they're nothing without us and they know it.

doesnt do it on default firefox google page either, just top level google.com

    http://www.google.com/firefox?client...US:eek:fficial

so im assuming it wouldnt do it for other googles either

testing shows its only doing it on google.com, must be a new feature, its not a bad one, but its not ZOMG I CANT LIVE WITHOUT IT either (i dont use autocomplete at all so i dont really care>.>)

Google.com doesn't do it for me (Firefox), so meh. When I'm searching stuff on Youtube it does though, and I actually like it lol.

Looks like it's an option. I hit "preferences" and clicked the "Do not provide query suggestions in the search box." button.

I did have a bit of fun typing in weird words or phrases and seeing the suggestions though. I might turn it back on.

Oh I didn't notice this, but then again I use Firefox and its search engine (use "ctrl + k" as the shortcut). Additionally, if you are a Firefox 3 user try this:

Right-click on youtube's (or any other search engine) search box. Add a keyword for this search. Fill in the name and assign it a letter, say "y."

Once done, just type the letter with w/e you're looking for in the address tool bar:

    Comes in really handy.

Autofill was in beta for a while now, looks like they finally released it on the main google.com page. It's just an AJAX powered search form like yahoo's. Not sure if there's a way to disable it though, like yahoo's. It's not done by an add-on or toolbar or anything, its a backend programming script, which is done with ajax.

I noticed this today myself. I am really enjoying it as I work in the IT support field and constantly am looking up new windows error messages. I had to look up a certificate revocation list error and after typing in the first 3 words of the 20 word error message I was able to click on the appropriate match in the list generated by google.com. Very nice feature.

My only dislike for it is that it supersedes the firefox auto-complete feature. I wish there was a way to have both lists of suggestions available.

Very common for web-based companies to do things like this and test a new feature on a portion of their userbase.

Used to be called "Google Suggest" and was in beta for a long-ass time, which one Firefox extension allowed you to use it all over the Google site.

There's a flag for "Query Suggestions" under prefs which is new and likely related, although it doesn't work with Firefox, even with my extension turned off.

mine was set on "do not provide query selections" by default. I had to switch it to "provide..." then back to "do not provide..." then saved choices to fix it
