Professional webhosting suggestions?

If you can run linux make yourself a website by apache and just buy a DNS name for like 20$ per year, unless bandwith is a problem

It's ok, I logged in via the web thing, but then work got a bit busy and people were nearby, and the web interface looks a bit more suspicious via the web thing so I decided to quit.

Just fyi, chatzilla is just a client, it still uses IRC protocols which will stand out like a neon sign on IDS systems, so it's not like you're invisible using it or something. If your network policy says no chat, IRC is generally included in that, so use at your own risk.

Any experience w/ their ecommerce package? Some of my clients want to implement ecommerce to their websites but I wondered if it'd be best for me to use the 1on1 service or just use oscommerce forms, etc. instead (although it's a fucking hassle to deal w/ them).

I use the "Business" package for a small project of mine (personal) so I have no experience with their servers/commerce stuff. However I've been with them for 5 years odd now.

And ok, I catch the Rome thing now =p

Also, I tried Chatzilla but it seems no matter how I configure it, it won't by-pass the proxy. Don't worry though, today's incident was kinda one off. So I uninstalled it incase people see.

As for chat policies, we use AOL intensively to deal with a team in India and within the office too, so it's not tooooo big of an issue. I've seen people install them all in one clients including IRC/MSN built in, but because I haven't been there very long I'm just playing it safe.

It sounded like you were trying to say that chatzilla doesn't behave like a normal IRC client and can't get you in trouble. This is obviously not the case, so I wanted to make sure that point was clear before someone ignorant got in trouble for something they didn't have to.

I assume nothing when it comes to the extent of peoples' knowledge of the various facets of technology; if I haven't seen them specifically indicate a grasp on something, they might as well not know it at all (how many people do you know personally that can code a webpage but don't know the first thing about the insides of a PC, or vice versa?), so I had no idea where you were coming from. Obviously it was a simple misunderstanding, AGAIN.

You've basically suggested that either he's too thick to know that an irc client wouldn't connect to an irc network via the irc protocol, or that I'm thick enough to suggest it to him.

Anyway I use 1&1 (although I use the USA branch) and have not had a single problem with them. Apparently there are horror stories of when you're trying to leave them, but considering how awesome it's been, and the value of the webhosting, and their 98% uptime, they're really good. In all the time I've been with them my forums have only been down once, and for less than 2 minutes too.

Whatever you do , STAY AWAY FROM NETFIRMS. They're a terrible company and my website was down so frequently, leaving them wasn't so much of a pain, but I'm baffled at how a company like that can charge more, give less, and have a 60% uptime with the cheaper plans.

I know you've done your share of diagnostic work for people, so you have to be able to appreciate the absurdly wild conclusions people occasionally reach about various things... thestig mentioned people being around at work (and thus the implication of being caught doing something one isn't meant to be doing), to which you responded 'chatzilla ftw'. Now I'm pretty sure the client he uses ultimately has very little impact on his risk of being caught, and there was otherwise no real mention of preferred clients, so boasting the merit of chatzilla is rather irrelevant... so what other logical step would you suppose I should take?
 
(note: I have no input about the morality/legality of doing things against company policy, I have gmail chat enabled to talk to friends at work which is a nono by the wording of our user agreement, so don't think I'm on some high horse)
 
Taking offense to being offered information you already know just kinda baffles me, but everybody is different I guess. Sorry to waste your time reading something you didn't have to :/

Edit: No doubt this post sounds smug in some way too, but it seems I can't help that perception. It's been something I get accused of just about everywhere I go, and while I really don't expect any sympathy for mentioning this, let me just say that it really hurts to be called an asshole all the time when your only intent is sharing what you know. :/

I'll try to make a mental note to distance myself from your conversations since my responses seem to do more harm than good. Sorry again.
