Nigerian scammers, scam CitiBank for $27mil.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/21/ny...1&ref=business

In October, Citibank received two dozen faxed requests for money to be wired, and it transferred $27 million to accounts controlled by the conspirators in Japan, South Korea, Australia, China, Cyprus and the United States, the complaint says.

Citibank called the officials whose names and numbers it had been given to verify the transactions, prosecutors said. The numbers turned out to be for cellphones in Nigeria, South Africa and Britain used by the conspirators.

Citibank, in its investigation, later determined the package of documents had come via courier from Lagos, Nigeria, rather than from the offices of the National Bank of Ethiopia, in Addis Ababa.

Citibank has credited back the lost funds to the National Bank of Ethiopia, said one person who was briefed about the situation.

Is this an excuse to get mad about the bailout again?

Citibank was assured that a rich king was dieing and they would inherit the sum of 45 BILLION dollars. They just had to pay the processing fees. They would have paid back the bailout money after the king died.

The article makes it seem that the transactions were placed before the whole bailout deal. When the money was attempted to be transferred it didn't say.

Edit: Clearly the official documents had something about mortgages in there.

I only seem to get the ones asking me pose as the relative of a dead millionaire that had my last name. I don't know how the scam works, but they did ask for my account number and just hit delete after reading that far.

My mother isn't very tech savvy, she barely knows computers, but when she received an email like this she unfortunately believed it. (She also tells me her laptop is broken when she sees those ads that say "Your computer has 17 viruses! Click here to fix them").

The story in her email was some old lady is dying of cancer, and they want to give their whole inheritance to a random person to make their lives better than the one they had to live with, and all the information that was needed to inherit the dying millions was the bank account information!

She apparently replied to the 'old lady' asking "Why did you choose me of all people?" - this is when she told me what was going on, and THANK GOD I STOPPED HER IN TIME.

The point of this post is to say there are still people out there who don't know computers much that's why these scams are a huge success, also the fact that it usually hooks the poorer people in society who are hoping for a financial miracle like that to happen to wipe all their debts.

This happened a few years ago and she's learned her lesson since.

Well your mother is light years smarter than most, the people I talk to repeatedly fall for the scams. I mean, they call us asking us to reset accounts, to nuke their hotmail accounts etc....

It's weird. You live and learn. Unfortunately some don't learn.

Does this mean Citibank is actually run by a bunch of little old ladies?
