What I find amazing is how much they knew 150 years ago. There was no car, no computer, no tap water, but they were able to calculate and understand stuff like this better than many engineers now.

Really? Because I was gonna say, 150 years ago, education wasn't a guaranteed, and only the brightest students were picked from wealthy families. Also, scientists didn't have to worry about things like making money, which, I'm sure left them free to do whatever the hell they wanted.
