because 160 years ago they didn't spend as much time trying to make frivolous things as they did now, they actually tried (generally as a whole) to advance the collective understanding of everything rather than trying to use it for corporate gains

Really? Because I was gonna say, 150 years ago, education wasn't a guaranteed, and only the brightest students were picked from wealthy families. Also, scientists didn't have to worry about things like making money, which, I'm sure left them free to do whatever the hell they wanted.

go check your history books, scientists weren't rolling in it (still aren't), it took money to fund research then as now and most of them had a side job or at least patrons occasionally.
