Headsets dying

So my sisters computer, which is a few years old and built myself, has been eating headsets so to speak for a long time.

I've gone through a bunch of headsets, mostly cheap ones, but 2-3 in the range of 40-50$. They seem to last several months then die. I'm afraid to buy a headset in the 100$ range because I'm afraid its the computer and not just the headsets. Most are logitechs.

Basically what happens is the sound just randomly stops coming through the headset after so long of being used. Every headset has been USB, all died through different USB ports - but no other USB devices have ever had a problem, nothing else on the computer inside or out has ever had a problem. Been using the same Mice, keyboards, etc for years.

I'm pretty sure the computer is currently using onboard sound through the mobo, should I pick up a cheap sound card? Should I just try a more expensive headset since most of the ones eaten by it were cheapo's and logitechs?

I don't know if I was able to use those headsets on other computers, but the one that just died today I tried on my PC and it works fine. Why is it that only headsets are having problems via usb and nothing else? Is there a way to get this current headset to work again?


Edit:: Tried uninstalling the headset driver through sounds, plugged it back in got the found new hardware thing, tried to test hardware and got the "your device cannot play sounds" error again. In ventrilo, the error says "CreateCaptureBuffer Failed. HR=E_FAIL." I really don't know what to do here, the headset is fine on my computer, there has to be a way to get it to work again on the other one. I have been wanting to reformat that PC for a while, think that may solve it? It will only be a temp fix though cause Im sure it'll happen again unless I figure out what is actually happening. Note: These headsets have only been used for teamspeak/vent and voip so sound isn't constantly going through them all day long, just for a few hour sessions a day. No music through them.

That's a toughie. Can I ask, do the previous broken headsets work on any other computer? If every headset is failing on just her machine but work fine elsewhere it's definitely her PC.

And do you go through a USB hub or not? And is your computer a namebrand or built from scratch or ?

It's built from scratch, no other problems with any USB ports. They are all in the pc no hubs or usb soundcards. I don't know if I still have any other broken headsets still, if I find one I'll update.
