Router problem and ISP problem?

After switching from Telus ADSL to Shaw cable, we have been experiencing a number of problems.

Occasionally images on webpages will not appear until refreshing the browser multiple times.

Occasionally webpages themselves will not load, 404 error or the page cannot be displayed errors. This happens on a large number of sites and isn't unique to certain webpages. Sometimes they can be displayed, a minute later they won't.

In FFXI, the search function and AH browsing loads at a crawling pace. Often taking a solid 30-60 seconds to /sea in the area I'm in, or any other aspect of searching. Often while browsing the AH, it can take the same amount of time to view a list of items like Head armor. Sometimes it will display half the contents of a list, continuing to show only half when I attempt time and time again to view the list.

Also, there has been a very noticeable 2-3 second lag between actions. Like casting a spell, I will attempt to cast from the menu or a macro and it takes 2-3 seconds to perform it.

I'm not sure at all what kind of issue is causing this. If it may be a firewall issue, the new ISP or the modem and router they supplied us with. Tomorrow I'll call the ISP but it'd be great if I could get some insight before that.

I changed the router to an older one I had laying around earlier today with no changes that I could notice.

this looks like it might be an intermittent issue with connectivity on your isp side. take note of your modem when you experience this problem if your light that shows connection to the internet is flashing or solid. the other side of this is bc your on cable at peak hours your internet will slow down due to sharing that pipeline with everyone in your neighborhood if you slow down to a crawl your browser will time out and also cause page cannot be displayed. so the things to check for are if you are losing connectivity completely douring these times or if you are using up all of your available bandwidth. your isp provider should be able to monitor these things and give you a report

PC/Activity blinks.

I do notice longer loading times at peak hours, but that doesn't mean they time out. When these "404 errors, page cannot be displayed errors" occur, it happens instantly, there's no time out.

I'll be sure to ask them for a report anyway, like you suggested, as maybe that is the problem.

Shaw is pretty solid in winnipeg, but everyone has a point to bitch somewhere.

to save you time, your ISP, or any ISP is going to make you do this:

first ping your router,

then ping a reliable site on the internet

if you get intermittence to your router youll know where its coming from.

though, even if there is intermittence there are still possibilities, even with broadband (can you call it that now? i guess 56k still exists, although where im not certain) i would get lag if someone would start a torrent or something similar. this is a common problem if youve ever lived among what could only be called a young weeaboo.

basically, there was a scheduled time to watch naruto. which meant downloading new episodes and seeding them. the seeding would slow me down to a crawl.

Did I correctly ping the router? No idea if I should be posting ip numbers like that or not, so I xxx'd them out.

well, if you're willing to try it, try ping -n 100, 4 is a pretty small sample. though because i see your ping to the router is <1ms and none were lost, youd just be looking for blips that stop you.
also you probably dont have to mask your default gateway theres only so many combinations, and so much someone can do with it in a local network.

true semirelated story, if i needed a break at work i would make someone do ping -t google.com (ping infinitely until cancelled) until i was satisfied.

edit: but your response time to google is fastlike, does google take time to process as well? try pinging a site that takes alot of time to load. and when you play ffxi, whats the S/R?

im thinking it may be a setting in the transition from ADSL to Cable that is slowing you down. but i havent done this in a while, ive tried to renounce it after that call centre
