Help me BG New Yorkers (cheap housing)

First time asking help here, so please excuse me for any n00bness in how I made the thread.

I'm going to start up at a new job in NYC, and due to some complicated fuckups my housing arrangement collapsed and I need to find a place, and fast. Due to my low pay I need to find them as economic (aka cheap) as possible, and I'm looking up listings in the Bronx.

So my question is whether or not it is safe to live there, at least short term (6 weeks to 3 months), or is it as crazy dangerous as rumored? Are there any specific areas in the Bronx I should look at or avoid? Any comments on a fair price on a one room rental? Is the Bronx my best choice for my $700ish budget, in regards to ease of commute and safety? Comfort at this time is not a requirement whatsoever.

Any general info/tips on startup living arrangements in NYC is also greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

The Bronx is big, like really really big. There are some really nice, expensive areas, and some area's that are not so safe. Some nice ones include Riverdale, City Island, Orchard Beach, Pelham Park, Mt. Vernon, Bronxville, Fordham, Moshulu, Gun Hill (lol). Some not so nice ones include: Parkchester, Grand Concourse(near Yankee stadium, can go good or bad really depending), Kingsbridge.

Try checking craigslist for a good deal, perhaps a studio, or even a room for rent (at least for the time being) could suffice for your budget. The Bronx might not have the best rep, but it really is not all that bad in a lot of areas. Even in some of the "bad areas" there are nice parts of. Do some more research!

Thanks guys. I'm looking up all the listings that I could, just really need pointers on the location. I see some Brooklyn housing that's also low priced, how's the commute to midtown compared to the Bronx?

Harlem is pretty cheap lately. I've seen some studios go for less that 600 a month. If you're considering The Bronx, Harlem isn't that much different.

I have to agree with this right here.. Jersey City is a quick subway ride away from Manhattan and it's MUCH less expensive.
