    NYC Cablevision or FiOS customers

So as most cablevision customers know, ABC pulled their channels from Cablevision and my family, which watches ABC 7 and ESPN is not pleased. However, we've been considering a switch for some time considering how slow our regular Optimum online service has gotten and the fact that if we upgrade the internet with cablevision, it'll be more than a comparable FiOs package in terms of price to what we have now, that has their fastest internet service and includes a phone line. Wondering how many people here in the City made the switch or how FiOs customers feel about their service.

FiOS is retardedly fast and well worth the money. I can't even use friends computers that have cable modems because it feels like dialup to me now, lol.

On the other hand, luckily verizon's been pretty reliable for me, which is good because the downside is that when something goes wrong they are absolutely horrible about customer service.

I love Fios but their customer service is pretty bad. When I started I just had their Fios internet, then they were doing door to door sales and offered a great package for their cable and internet combined.

It took 5 months for them to finally combine the two packages and give me the right price. For 5 months each month I had to call and get my bills changed each call lasting about 20 minutes. But for those 5 months with their dumb math I wound up paying much less than the package price so I guess it worked out.

In the 2 years or so I had them I had to make one tech call which was actually pretty fast and the first guy that answered was able to help me out.

Yeah I have Fios too. They had actually amde errors in my favor for a couple months, not charging us for any of the TV services. We were worried that when they caught on we were going to get slammed with some kind of retroactive dues and some interest, but since we had talked to them about it a few times they didnt do that.

So they are incredibly stupid, but sometimes it works out in your favor.

fios TV is great. tons of channels, everything's in HD. (except for MSG in NYC area, can't watch knicks games... but who watches knicks games? but i digress.)

as far as the internet speed, here's a test i just ran:

    OH SWEEETTTT JEESSSUUUSSSS

Question: does it slow down when tons of people connect? My Cable slows down a shitton around 8-10 down to like 5mpbs, when it should be doing 11+

Fios is always at high speeds. I love that shit but I only have the 20 mbs setup. Wish I got the 40 or 60 mbs one but its way expensive.

do you pay for the 50mbps package? I think I have 20mbps

and yeah, most of the time I have my laptop attached to a cat5 cable because I feel like wifi bottlenecks the speed too much, lol.

edit: yeah this is the lowest/cheapest fios tier available, I guess:

i've run that speed test often, just for fun when i'm bored, and i've never seen it dip below 30Mb/s. i'll run it @ 8PM tomorrow night and post results here.

i'm not sure, i share internet connection with my landlord. but based on the results, it appears they pay for the 50Mbp/s package.

20/20 package. My upstream is actually faster than that, it's more like 21.5, speedtest.net can't get that high.

If you can actually afford the whole thing then I'd switch to FIOS. I get DirectTV in my dorm but back at my parents place they have Cablevision still and due to money concerns and the fact that trying to get them to switch would take around 3 months of explaining with pie charts and abunch of data(you seriously don't know how long it took to convince them to drop AOL dialup for cable back when I was in high school). They get their spanish channels so they don't really care about anything else.

For a comparison speed test, this is what they get for $40 a month, makes me want FIOS so bad

Not in NYC or Verizon region, but I do have Uverse. Uverse is a hell lot better than the other option around here in Time Warner Cable. FIOS is better than Uverse, so switch ASAP.

Ok question about the bundle packages for phone tv and net. Can you customize a package or are the packages set? Looking at their site, the tv service appears to be scaled in the same way their net is scaled with their highest speed net packaged with their biggest tv package.

Only net providers in NYC that are big is Cablevision, Verizon and Timewarner in select zones.
