    Weird Alpha/Beta Invite story

Friend of mine who applied only for the PS3 (Didn't purchase FF13 nor use a code for it) got a PC Alpha invite. He applied wayyy before FF13 came out the email they sent him was along the lines that PS3 testing won't be until later and that they encourage him to do the Windows Testing.

Yes I saw him check only the PS3 beta box even though it says not to as well.

    What the fucks?

    * To PlayStation 3 Version Applicants:
This test phase will deal only with the Windows version of the
    software.
Details regarding the test schedule for the PlayStation 3 version will
be released by email at a later date. If possible, we still ask and
encourage you to take part in the testing on a Windows PC.

It raises the question of why they were even considered for the alpha/beta when they most likely applied only for the PS3 because of the fact their PC can't support it

    edit: essentially its saying

Here is an invite that you did not want to test on nor are we sure you are capable of using it. Not to mention it is going to expire before the PS3 version is allowed which potentially threw off his chances at that. Unless the expiration date is renewed for the next phase of testing?

guess it's good news for the people who applied using their codes (myself included)

As far as I remember you couldn't apply for a PS3 beta before FFXIII was released. You could choose PS3 as a platform you plan to play the game on when it hits retail, but you were still applying for tests on PC.

So no, people that applied for PS3 beta (using FFXIII code, because that was the only way) are not suddenly getting PC invites.

But my memory might be wrong

There was a check box for Windows and PS3 and next to PS3 it said something like DO NOT CHECK ME THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE CODE.

He checked it anyway and did not check the windows version.

Then I'd guess that it treated people that did that as PC applicants still.
I don't really see any other option, because we didn't hear any similar stories.

My friend applied for something. He's kind of retarded so he didn't follow the rules but somehow he still got invited.

    It's so WEIRD!

After hearing various anecdotal evidence about who has received alpha invites from SE, I can conclusively say that they used the following method to choose amongst applicants:

    • Design application webpage in PHP
    • Load applications into PostgreSQL database
    • Develop complicated, highly advanced cost function to weight computer specs, education level, ffxi experience, and time available to test
    • Fuck it, use excel rand() function to pick applicants
