Does windows 7 affect FFXI negatively in any way? Currently using XP, and I've heard horror stories about vista being a pain to work with if you play FFXI, so I avoid that.

    So I'm getting...

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

upon getting to the windows 7 install screen. I bought the home edition and used the 64 bit CD. Both of my hard drives have been reformatted, so both are clean now. So what's the deal?

You have a DVD drive right? Go into the BIOS configuration and make sure something along the lines of "CDROM" or "CD/DVD" is enabled in the boot sequence. It doesn't really matter which order you put it in as long as you're not trying to boot from anything else.

Although if you're actually getting into the Windows installation screen, it could be something wrong with your DVD drive.

edit: actually after re-reading, it sounds like the hard drives are what's missing from the boot sequence. It's not letting you install because if you did, you wouldn't be able to boot from that hard drive. I don't know why it wouldn't let you just add it to the boot sequence after you install it. It will forever be a mystery.
