Questions regarding IP addresses and tracking.

So basically I would like to know how to track an IP address back to a person, or a specific enough location that I could determine who it belongs to.

Basically someone wrote a blog anonymously and then put a link to it on their facebook. They worded the blog so it looked like anyone could have written it. And I want to be able to prove that this person is who did infact write the blog. Any help would be appreciated.

even if you did a "whois" on the ip address, the most information you might get is who there ISP is and information about the ISP not the person who wrote it. There is very little chance from what I know to track it down to a specific person from the IP address alone. Most people have dynamic IP addresses so they change every time their modem is restarted.

Plug in the IP in any whois website and it will give you their city and state. If you want anything more specific than city, youre sol for the most part. Doubtful they have a static IP, and finding free resources that trace passed the ISP are hard to come by now a days.

Or is that on some other level that requires actual hacking or something?

Social networking sites and clever use of Googlin' based on the info you have available.

If you have a persons' real name it makes shit a lot easier, which is what /b/ relies on a lot. How they figure out the people based on just a photo and some other shit though, I have nfc.

so wait, then how do people get busted for downloading music and movies? Isn't it by tracing an ip address back to a home address? Oh wait, i guess the isp gets the complaint and then somehow tracks it to a user. but then only they can trace it? fuck me, more confused now then i was before

A company contacts the ISP with the persons IP and the day/time it was downloaded. The ISP then looks to see what subscriber was using that IP at the time.

ISP issues you your IP address, therefore if someone reports your address, the ISP will know who it belonged to at the given time.

ISP issues you your IP address, therefore if someone reports your address (which is shown under the peer list for the most part, assuming no proxy), the ISP will know who it belonged to at the given time.
(since most people have a dynamic IP)

If you have a picture taken with a smartphone, 90% of the time their real info will be in the EXIF and they'll be too stupid to erase it. If it's taken with an actual camera, then most people never fill out the info and it'll only list the camera model/exposure.
