bump
lot of development going on here, ganiman is actively working on it now as well, it seems they've gotten it to run just fine, the resolution is a little low and I think there's still some keyboard problems but tl;dr version really is that it runs great on said settings
With the help of a couple of other people, I have FFXI working in linux. It runs in windowed mode with a few bugs. See the topic at FFXIclopedia forums here:
http://forums.ffxiclopedia.org/viewt...hp?f=1&t=14827
There are screen shots and a couple of youtube vids of the progress in that thread. USB Logitech Gamepad works too. I will make a video of logging into POL/FFXI from start to finish later on - also will be testing on a mac soon.
I will also add that Windower simply does not work in Wine.
Meh, it's windowed anyway. I don't HAVE to have the addons, they sure help but not necessary.
Maybe someone will figure out how to get it to work, anyway.
Or maybe some homebrew addons just for wine.
well, uh, this is somewhat related (not really), but is uploading windows xp from a disk on boot camp a pretty straight forward process?
to tell the truth, i have the disk and boot camp, but i have no idea what i'd be doing. i am computer retarded when it comes to technical stuff like that. i just know the shortcuts and how to use it.
edit: i'd rather not fuck up my macbook. it's been a solid year without breaking or some shit.
uploading and OS doesn't make a lot of sense
do you mean, boot from disc like you can do with some smaller OSes? isn't going to work on XP unless you've got like a blu-ray drive and even then it's going to be very hackish.
if you mean loading XP onto your macbook via bootcamp; yeah that's a straightforward process (in fact, Apple tech support will probably help walk you through it) - this would allow you to dual-boot both OS X and XP but it'll obviously take up additional disk space.
U can haz trojan!1111!1
Nah, hes butthurt I got him to transfer to Titan, found out he was a giant douche, kicked him from linkshell and banned him from IRC, so hes butthurt is all.I guess you posting your progress then discontinuing to post in the thread made Killgannon think he "proved" you were retarded. I'm also betting he thinks Aikar is "renowned" for being an idiot for something similar. Maybe he didn't update a plugin fast enough?
Version 1 of a Gentoo FFXI Wine doc has been posted here:
http://www.wineffxi.org/gentoo
Also see the lively discussion here:
http://forums.ffxiclopedia.org/viewt...hp?f=1&t=14827
wineffxi.org has some small forums that can be used for Wine/FFXI support. Any volunteers to "translate" the initial Gentoo doc for other distros/operating systems may help out some of the less savvy users a great deal.
It's actually a problem with the launcher, not Windower. The launcher works by getting the address of LoadLibrary in it's own process, then calling CreateRemoteThread on PlayOnline's processing using that address, which works because kernel32.dll is always loaded at the same address on Windows however it's random on Linux/Wine, so it just crashes.
Sorry for the necro, but apparently much has been done about FFXI that the game works in WINE now? Has anybody here tested it?

RL friend of mine has been playing on it for a while, says it's playable, but there's still some issues, the biggest being that it crashes if minimized, probably related to their fullscreen code, even though it's running in a Wine window. It's viable if you really don't want to play on Windows, though, and it'll probably keep improving. Oh, and not having Windower can be a big issue for some as well.
Has anyone checked this out? http://down.codeweavers.com/
Program called crossover for both linux and mac, its basically a modified version of WINE. One for regular desktop apps and other for games.
It's normally $40, but today 10/28 they're giving out the full version copies free for download.
Don't know if it was worth mentioning, thought someone might give it a try.
You won't see better performance with CrossOver, and may very well see much worse. CrossOver Games is just a customized Wine distribution with a few game-specific patches (not for FFXI, all that dev was done in main Wine), nicer config tools and professional support. On the downside, it has a slower release cycle than Wine, CrossOver Games is released every few months, Wine has both new dev releases and new stable releases every few weeks. I think that if you're playing something that's still being very actively worked on, you're much better off with official Wine, so you can get frequent updates immediately after they become available.
