If you have the money to go for i7, by all means do so but as far as XIV is concerned i5 = i7 when comparing same "range" models.

i5 750 + GTX470 here, 1920x1200 @ CSAAx8 Everything Highish without AO/DoF and I manage capped FPS everywhere but a very few places, in which case it's more like 45 FPS which isn't really a big deal.

I can run 3 FFXIV instances at 1280x1080 with capped FPS too, haven't really tried more.

Also, search near your place for a microcenter if you want to find the cheap i7 processors. They sell them at bulk prices to get you to come in to the store. Leave as soon as you pick up your processor though.

Would one of you guys be able to check what the resolution options are within the XIV config for me? Just built a new PC and would like to give XIV a shot, but the TV I'm stuck using as a monitor is being wonky and won't work correctly with normal resolutions, I'm stuck using 1670x960, and I just want to make sure there's a resolution option available that can fit within that relatively well.

Will probably be back asking how to tweak the parts I have soon, I got a 5225~ on the benchmark but I'm fairly certain it should be able to do a lot better than that.

Just installed/updated XIV and am tooling around in FFXIVConfig...what would be considered 'good' settings to try the game out at and see how my build fares? Not really sure on what's what for the multisampling option, and I recall there being another option that doesn't do much graphical good to max out but lags the hell out of the game turned up.

Anyways my pertinent parts of the build:

    i7-950
    GTX-460
    6GB 1600mhz RAM

    Avoid Ambient Occlusion, DoF

    1920*1xxx
    8x AA
    Standard-High++ for the rest

Should still manage capped FPS with that build.

Thanks, any difference between 8x CSAA and 8xQ MSAA?

Alright, a few more build questions, not for me this time though...my cousin needs a bit of a budget build, he's not super worried about looks as long as it runs smoothly. Some tool at Best Buy was trying to get him to spend like $900 on some shit so I figured I could either save him a bit or at least get him more for the money.

Anyways was looking at something along these lines:

    CPU: Lynnfield i5-760
    board: [/U]]Biostar T5 XE CFX-SLI
    GPU: EVGA 01G-P3-1145-TR GTS250
    PSU: Corsair CMPSU-650TX
    RAM: Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1333C9 4GB DDR3 1333mhz
    HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM

Should this be pretty sufficient to run the game on medium settings?

    gts250 is a little old

    http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...s%20Family&sw=

    same price much better

BTW I do not recommend that card. I recommend the 460 or better.

Ok, I'm planning to build a computer this year (if it'll actually happen is yet to be seen, but anyways)
I've been waiting to decide on exact hardware until testing info on some of the new parts this year came out. And the last bit just did with the GTX 560.

Now, I'm a PS2 FFXI player and I'd prefer PS3 for FFXIV, but if that version gets delayed long enough that it's still PC only by the time I build, I'll play the PC version until the other finally shows.

I'm currently looking at a single 560 or 570 as my graphics (with an eye to grab a 2nd in 1-2 years to SLI)
What I need to know, the reviews are saying the 560 performs as well as the 470, so is anyone here on BG playing FFXIV using a SLI 460, 470 (SLI or single), or 570 (again SLI or single), and what kind of FFXIV visuals are you getting out of it? (How high can you push the settings, fps issues, etc.)

Single MSI GTX470 at stock frequencies
60 fps most of the time, 45 fps lowest i've ever seen it drop to with these settings

With AAx16 and everything on highest the same crowd on image 3 gives 25-35 FPS which isn't really playable.

    Spoiler: show

Well, that's a case for the 570 I guess. I wonder if SLI 570 would let you turn AO & DoF on (or SLI 560 even).
But it'll still look damn good if I just go with the 560. Now I just gotta pick between the i7 2500K or 2600K XD. Looks like the system will be $1,300 to $1,500 with a monitor.

I'm running a 460 superclocked edition with i7 950. I manage to run it just fine at 1920x1080, 8x CSAA, standard general and background drawing, high shadow detail, high texture quality and filters and DoF. I don't have AO on. I haven't actually tried to turn AO on so idk how it would perform, looks great to me with the settings now. I get around 40 or so running around town in open areas and places with many people but it's nothing unplayable. When not many other players are on screen i get 50-60 in town. Out in the field it's always 55+.

I figure with another 460 SC in SLI i can run it at max or close enough enjoyably.

I think Cooleko has a SLI build and has AO turned on, may want to ask him.

Yeah, he talks about it here (and the previous page). http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/947...Thread/page123

According to him, 480 SLI can pull 1920x1080 and everything on, with no FPS drop in crowds.
Aaaaand, looking at benchmarks, it seems that the 570 performs the same as a 480, so yeah, guess I'll get that, then a 2nd one next time there's a price drop.
Just gotta pick the CPU now. Most everywhere says the 2500K is enough, but I wonder if the 2600K would mean I needn't worry about any bottlenecking with the eventual SLI.

ill second all the above, except new menu option has to be 8 even with 2x480hydro copper in SLI

EVGA just released the 560 superclocked, which two in SLI does better than 470s (link is on evga forums in the 560 thread). for 260~80 each this is not a bad idea for new builds that want sli

    I just purchased a 560 to replace my '09s budget build 280.

I'm not very tech savvy and was wondering if you guys could give me your opinions/advice on this build:

    -i5 2500K Processor
-Standard liquid CPU cooling system through iBUYPOWER
    -8GB DDR3-1333 RAM
    -AMD Radeon HD 6950 - 2GB
    -Gigabyte P67A-UD3 motherboard
    -PSU: Corsair 750TX
    -1.5TB HDD
    -24x dual-layer drive
-Killer Xeno Pro Gaming Network Card
    -Windows 7 Premium

    Total Price: $1,233

I guess my main concern are the motherboard and cooling system. I purchased the +10% overclocking, and the graphics card seems pretty high-end so I'm concerned if the motherboard and/or cooling system will be able to handle everything. Any advice/comments are much appreciated
