In other news from Afghanistan, a new public opinion poll of young Afghan men in Kandahar and Helmand provinces has been released by the International Council on Security and Development. The poll founded that 92 percent of young men in those regions knew nothing about the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States; 40 percent think NATO forces are there "to destroy Islam" or Afghanistan itself; 61 percent believe that Afghan national security forces will not be able to cope without international support; and 56 percent suspect that Afghan policemen are helping the Taliban.

And 40% think that NATO is there to destroy Islam or Afghanistan itself. Well, perhaps that "winning hearts and minds" strategy could use a little work.

Aren't most of Afghan men at this point ignorant of their own country's history before 1970? It seems the only things they are being taught is that the communists invaded, the Afghans beat them out (with no help, they are taught) and now the Western countries are doing much the same. Most of the educated professionals fled Afghanistan in the 90s and haven't come back.

I wouldn't expect any of the remainder to know about terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. I wouldn't expect them to know much of anything beyond which tribe in Afghanistan they're supposed to hate at the moment.

So what, the Afghans don't know about shit that doesn't really matter to them...how many Afghan men are even literate? Don't you think we ought to teach them to read before we start teaching them about something that happened half a world away?
