2026-27 NHL Regular Season Thread: NTC Misery & 2 Minutes for Tucking

The regular season is upon us. Except for Charlie McAvoy (suspended 6 games for the Benson slash in the playoffs) and Ridly Greig (2 games for roughing in the playoffs)

The Flyers reset the market with the Carlsson offer sheet that entertained everyone. Cale Makar will be the highest paid player starting next year (for now) when his $20.4M extension kicks in (or 1.133... Carlssons if that's your unit of measure.)

A bunch of new captains were named this off season
ANA: Granlund
CHI: Bedard
LAK: Doughty
NYI: Horvat
SJS: Celebrini
STL: Thomas
BOS: TBD as of typing this out. Probably Pasta.

Larkin and Hellbuyck kneecapped their careers with their trade demands. At least the former will play to the rain of Boos in Little Caesars Arena. The latter flat out refuses to play.

HNIC will live for another year. They're covering PWHL instead. How long that league lasts with Mark Walter's financial scheming remains to be seen. At least he built up a brand for some other billionaire to buy it.

Equipment infractions will have tighter enforcement this season - re: neck guards, visors, and helmets & untucked jerseys. How does Trevor Zegras feel about this after he got a 2 minute minor in a preseason game for a tucked in jersey?


Enjoy the season BG. I'm just hoping the Kings tank it this year instead of being a 1st round punching bag for the Oilers again. Maybe I'll just hatewatch the Sharks intermittently for some good hockey and reddit spamming this:

It's been a rule since 1964. GMs asked for the league to enforce it 2013 much to Ovechkin's objections.

I think it's primarily for number visibility, but technically any plastic padding needs to be covered by fabric and there is some hard plastic around the pants/waist that may not always be covered with a tucked in jeysey.
