path companions

I'm sorry to have to ask, but I just hit 25 pug tonight, and I don't seem to understand how to summon my path companion. I did the quest at 20, selected my NPC buddy, and had my meeting in the quicksand. However I can't seem to figure out what to do next.

I've gone back to the Quicksand. I've tried to find that instanced zone when you first select your npc. I've tried the NPC linkpearls (they are all dark purple / inactive)

Could someone point me in the right directions?

as far as i know you cannot summon your path companions ala FFXI, they only "help" you during story quests. someone please correct me if i am wrong.

That appears to be true as of now. The path companion is just the freedom to choose the race/gender(personality) of your cutscene buddy and is not comparable in any way to XI's "Adventuring Fellows" ...yet. If it's an issue with the missions themselves there's a thread all about those somewhere.
