Hemoglobin (lol for some reason that word always makes me think of Kuwabara)

Alright, so the blood mobile just turned me away, saying my iron was too low and gave me some information sheet.

Not going to type out the entire sheet, but will type out relevant parts.

"Normal Hemoglobin levels in males range from 13.8-17.2 g/DL. In females, the normal range is 12.1-15.1 g/dL"

"If your Hemoglobin is only mildly lowered, and you fall into one of the categories discussed above that almost always result in mild iron deficiency, a trial of iron replacement may be all t...hat's required. If, on the other hand, your Hemoglobin is lower than 11 g/dL, we believe it is imperative for you to consult your personal physician as soon as feasible so that the underlying cause for your anemia can be ascertained and appropriate therapy (if indicated) initiated."

"Your hemoglobin level as determied at the blood center today is listed below:
    10.8 g/dL"

Does this make me a tranny or a women or something?

Lol I can't afford to go to a doctor so seeing if anyone here know what's up.

Edit: Also, I feel perfectly fine, so I don't even know if this is a (potential) problem.

I think it's trying to say that you should eat some actual food, and not random junk food, or things you steal from your neighbors.

You need more Iron in your diet. If you can't afford red meats then get iron enriched foods. One good and cheap source of this is breakfast cereals. Almost all of them are fortified out the ass with everything your body needs, but that people don't normally get enough of

Hmm, I've only been turned away once before (and I was 16 then, 22 now) for blood and my eating habits as a whole haven't changed much since then.

I do suppose, however, I can get a dollar 50 box of apple dapples instead of taco bell one of these days. (lol I love ghetto cereal names)

Yes, eat more meat and get some shakes. You levels are low and your iron storage has been used up too.

You wont turn into a female, but it will lead to fatigue > muscle shrinkage starting with your smaller muscles first (penis/facial) > heart problems.

    Your levels are pretty low.

Hmm, well as far as fatigue goes, I haven't felt any and I'm pretty active. 72miles/week on my bicycle just to/from school, so including other places, probably 80-85. I'm in the gym twice a week, and I have a 1 credit jogging class twice a week (lol was at 11/12 credits for full time school).

Your muscles could be operating at lower percentage than they should be. A diet alteration would lead to naturally pushing your gear faster and some quick max and rep increases along with faster recovery.

10 is at the lower range of "below average", a *steady* average of 11 is considered anemic, you're anemic. As a severe anemic I happen to know a lot about this: so here it goes.

Well adding more iron to your diet wouldn't hurt, it can also be dangerous, a hemoglobin count will not tell you WHY your hemoglobin is low, and this can make all the difference. If you're actually receiving enough iron and increase it, there's a lot of complications that can arise if done for an extended period.

    It could be:
    1. Dietary lack, you're simply not eating enough. Food or a supplement can fix this.
    2. Malabsorbtion issues , such as issues with your stomach acid or intestines.
    3. Genetic Disorders
    4. Bone Marrow Disorders
    5. Cancer
    6. Internal Bleeding from an injury that has never quite healed right, this is the most likely cause next to diet. Things like nosebleeds, gingivitis/periodontitis where your gums bleed a lot, or getting a lot of small cuts can also cause/contribute here.

Another thing that a simple hemoglobin count doesn't tell you is the SIZE of your blood cells, generally people with anemia also tend to have smaller than normal blood cells for a double whammy of lower oxygenation and lower oxygen transport.

TBH, anemia is very serious if left untreated, because it's *always* a sign of another major problem.

If you absolutely cannot afford to go to a doctor , here is what I'd do.

Increase your dietary intake of iron for about a month, then get another hemoglobin count. Maybe the blood donation place will do it again for you if you try and donate, otherwise getting a simple hemoglobin count often only costs $30~ at a hospital and depending on the state you might not even need a prescription.

If your hemoglobin count increases to 12~+ after a month of better diet, it was likely dietary.

If it doesn't increase to *normal* levels, or only increases slightly(still under 12), it is likely the sign of a much greater issue and you should see a doctor at that point, warning...it's gonna get expensive, you better hope the health care bill doesn't get repealed once you're at this stage!

But really though, the "I feel fine" is a mentally you gotta drop to a certain degree, if you find out you've been living with this for a long time, you don't know what "fine" feels like, you've simply adjusted to "feeling shitty", and if you can fix it, you'll feel like fucking superman compared to now.

Hmm, well it's just strange because I've been giving blood since I was 16 and only ever had this problem once before, with the last donation being only 2 months ago. Though, now that I mention it, I do remember trying to do a double red cell donation but my iron was too low for that, but high enough to do one unit red blood cell, one unit plasma, so I did that instead. (I always do the Alyx machine double donation).

So is this an over time type deal? Because I've only been absolutely turned away once before (when I first started donating so had to be 16-17).

My diet is absolute shit, so I'd like to keep this an option, but it hasn't changed in years. It's always been shit, so I wouldn't be quick to call it the source of the problem. Hmm. I guess we'll see where I'm at next time I go to donate. No insurance, or anything like that, so I don't even have consulting a physician as an option at the moment.

How 'bout if you have higher hemoglobin than normally? AIDS?

I mean mine was 16.5 but hey it could jump to 20+ overnight or something, you never know. I have to be prepared for the worst.

Hemoglobin isn't a villain from Spiderman? Wasn't Hemoglobin also in that Rock of Ages song by Def Leppard?
