    Xbox red ring

My xbox got the red ring of death last night. It is going to cost $100 to send it to microsoft because I bought it back in '06 and it is out of warranty. Last night I was doing some research and found this: http://jamesdean3redlightfix.com/?hop=kancit512. I was wondering if anyone had heard about people fixing the red ring themselves. I would love to save the money and the time shipping it.

how about you go on the website and check yourself? it will say if it's free or not, depending on the error you get. I got 3 fixed for free. One was supposed to cost money based on the error message I was getting, but I towel tricked it into oblivion until it gave me the "desired" code

Throw it in the garbage and buy a PS3. Don't make the same mistake I did fourteen times. (and counting)

I did check the website. That is how I know how much it will cost, and unless I am missing something they no longer ask for codes.

I saw the video where you use nuts and bolts to secure the heatsink to the motherboard. How difficult was it and how long did it take you?

I fixed 2 RRoD 360s that way, one was my dad's the other was my gf's, the first time i was a bit nervous, probably took me 45min-1 hour because i was having trouble opening up the console even with the tutorial vid. The 2nd 360 took me about 20-30 min since I knew what to do and it just became a lot easier. Success rate is really high imo, and not difficult at all with a steady hand. Just make sure you follow instructions very thoroughly and when it comes to cleaning off the excess thermal paste be careful with it.

I had fixed one 360 in this fashion, got it to last another few months. Died a 2nd time so I figured that was the end of it. It's not too hard of a process, and pretty damned cheap.

They extended the warranty to 3 light rrod for 3 more years, but since mine is 5 years old I missed it.

I assume if I fix it myself that I won't be able to send it to microsoft if it does break again. It would be worth it if it last for a while, but a couple of months might now be worth buying a new xbox.

Will do more damage than benefit longterm from my understanding. Sooner or later it will be completely defunct.
