Once upon a time you dressed so fine, you threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
Once upon a time you dressed so fine, you threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall", you thought they were all kiddin' you.
You used to laugh about, everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.
How does it feel?
How does it feel, to be on your own?
With no direction home.
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
Day do you prefer the Hendrix version to the original? I saw your fb post this morning. I've always liked Dylan's more personally
I'm 50-50 to tell ya the truth. This has been a hot topic for discussion w me and one of my friends recently. The original obviously has it's merit and is fucking awesome... I'm just really partial to Jimi's take on the song, lots more umph in the vocals... and those sweet Jimi licks when they hold the G. Dylan once said he didn't know he wanted to be a fulltime songwriter until he wrote this song.... keep in mind this was like 6 fucking albums in. Dylan = fucking brilliance so it's a tough comparison... However All Along the Watchtower I will say Jimi actually made the cover better than the original and Dylan even said after hearing Jimi's version he'd never play the song the same again.
Fun facts with Day.
I love you, Day, the summoning is complete.
Dylan's version of Like a Rolling Stone is pretty much perfection in music. Hell, Zappa said that if Like A Rolling Stone did what it needed to do, he didn't need to write anymore. Bruce Springsteen said the opening snare shot was like the door to his brain being kicked open.
That being said, Hendrix's Monterey cover is brilliant, but it just intrinsically lacks all of the things that make the Highway 61 version so sublime like the organ coming in just 1/8 of a note behind the rest of the instruments.
It's no stretch to say that Highway 61 is one of those albums that helped define me as a person.
Wow someone else that knows about the organ... you probably know this but that organ player was really a guitarist that badly wanted to join in on the song, he lied and said he had a part for it when he didn't... so in recording the song, he did the 1/8th note behind so that he knew he was on the right chord, but the end result was fucking fantastic. Yeah it's super hard to compare the 2 even though it's the same song. I go back and forth depending on my mood.
I know about the organ if you know what I mean.
