Warning concerning FFXIII and your console.

Apparently there's quite a few people who've had several disk reading issues with FFXIII freezing on them. The game would freeze then after-wards when the player either quits the game or resets the system the PS3 would fail to read or recognize any disk regardless of whether its a DVD/Blu-Ray/Game. The XMB would continue to work just fine, so would any game or video on the hard drive itself.

Here's the thread concerning the issue and who's been affected so far. Hard to say whether it's model specific yet.
    http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/F.../td-p/45382189

Video where the guy pretty much summarizes the situation.

Figured I'd make this thread since I had no warning whatsoever and I'm currently in the process of unfucking my system. Would of said screw it to endgame after I had finished the story had I known this problem.

The problem is it is burning out the laser lens in older PS3's. You can repair it yourself for a lot cheaper than sending your PS3 in (assuming you know how to do it).

The problem is well diagnosed at this point.

I have an 80GB PS3 I got not this past year, but the year before last. But it's not slim, so I guess it'd be considered 'old'. I've had like.. maybe 3-4 freezes on my PS3 over time, but not even from games, really. Like my system locked up while I was installing a game once (with only a few % left too) and had to hard rest.. but just freezes like that. Nothing that I can remember while in game.

I've read a few posts on various forums where people with the slim PS3 have had the lens go bad. I have the slim and so far I've had one time where it took me 4 or 5 tries to load my save. Other than that I haven't had any in-game freezes yet(30 hours).

It's not just a normal, routine freeze. This shit messes up your PS3 4 lyfe, dawg. You'll know if it happens. It makes every disc unreadable. Even God of War III the day it comes out!

Fuck I'm still mad about that and I STILL don't have a new PS3.

It probably won't be safe to play it unless your PS3 is one of the slim versions. It has been chewing up old fatties regardless of gig.

Solution: Play it on 360 =/ It's what I had to do.

I put 40 hours into the game over the course of a few days and never had so much as a hiccup. I guess I should count my blessings? I've got an original fat ps3 60gb with the ps2 chip inside.

Haha, I've been playing this for about 80 hours and I haven't had anything like this happen. Using an old NTSC fat 80gig PS3 (or was it 120?) I find it hard to believe this shit is happening, but now I don't wanna turn it on to find out.

This got anything to do with that PS3 update that removed other OS? Say I haven't updated my PS3 yet, could I still play?

I updated mine and played for at least an additional 30 hrs with no troubles on the MGS4 bundled 80 gig.

~110 hour file. Zero freezes, consider myself lucky and stop where I am? I do still have a year and a half on my warranty!

Man, I just need like 2 more trophies too.

edit: Left the PS3 on for as long as 20 hours at times during that fyi.

there was a case where a guy with a 120 slim fried his laser and he only had 130 hours on it.

i stopped playing a day or so after i read that as much as i wanted to keep playing and i'm only 70 or so hours in.

Sucks, I'd take the damn thing and get my money back if they'd let me. $70 for something I can't play at risk of blowing up my console.

I heard this does a similar thing to 360s as well. Though, it could be a whole 'nother range of issues there.

Pretty much the same thing I think, causes the console to RROD.

66hrs in I had my first freeze. Broke my reader. Apparently this happens on old ps3s, new slims as well as 360s.

Would a software fix sony could send out be able to repair the issue (meaning I should just await said update), or am I shit out of luck, seeing as my warranty is over?

I think it's mostly a laser issue, so if you can replace the laser you should be good. Otherwise, it seems like Sony and SE are playing the blame game with no one owning up, so I don't expect one side will claim responsibility and come up with a fix.
