If they're anything like me, one of the major contributors to the depression itself is seeing that all of the idiots around them are somehow more successful, so it's more that smart people are more depressed and they're extrapolating this in the wrong direction.

Makes you question just who the real idiot is sometimes.

Actually read the OP, and now i'm finding this highly suspect. I want to know whether a distinction is being made between depression, bipolar depression and major depression. I also want to know how this explanation accounts for the fact that major depression has serious long term neurodegenerative effects on the central nervous system, particularly, and of high importance, the hippocampus.

An important thing I would think is what kind of distinctions the study makes between people with confirmed psychological disorders that manifest as depression (like bipolar disorder) and people who are considered to be depressed but don't suffer from any particular physiological imbalance or definable condition.

Depression may be a technical term in the scientific field but when it comes to general human personality and behavior it's a highly relative, subjective concept.

    Another thing:
One reason to suspect that depression is an adaptation, not a malfunction, comes from research into a molecule in the brain known as the 5HT1A receptor. The 5HT1A receptor binds to serotonin, another brain molecule that is highly implicated in depression and is the target of most current antidepressant medications. Rodents lacking this receptor show fewer depressive symptoms in response to stress, which suggests that it is somehow involved in promoting depression. (Pharmaceutical companies, in fact, are designing the next generation of antidepressant medications to target this receptor.) When scientists have compared the composition of the functional part rat 5HT1A receptor to that of humans, it is 99 percent similar, which suggests that it is so important that natural selection has preserved it. The ability to “turn on” depression would seem to be important, then, not an accident.
And why would this be the case? Serotonin autoreceptors that are located presypnaptically decrease the level of serotonin released from the presypnaptic cell, so you could simply explain that as a mechanism to prevent the synaptic cleft from getting flooded with neurotransmitter and damaging the post synaptic cell from exitocitosis.

edit: and a lack of serotonin autoreceptors at the presynaptic cell simply means that there is more serotonin in the synaptic cleft which is what many antidepressents try to do: increase monoamine levels in the brain.

In all seriousness, I agree with Callisto, the causal link probably goes the other way.

see? I even made a graph... I make a lot of graphs *nervous laugh*

    but seriously,

<- 99th percentile in every standardized test
<- currently struggling with major depression issues

one case does not a theory prove, but it certainly doesn't hurt.
