    BG Auto: Brakes

Looking for some advice on front brake rotors to get for my 2002 Toyota Solara. I'm going to be doing the job myself w/my bro in law. I've already purchased some Wagner QC707 brake pads. These were purchased before the motor went out on my car, which is at the shop getting replaced right now.

I'm looking to stay under $100 for the set of rotors. I went to my local O'Reilly's and they just wanted to sell me some no name brakes. I've seen Raybestos has good ratings, but was recommended by my mechanic to go with Wagner pads as they last longer and have less dusting and road noise. They didn't say anything regarding the rotors though.

Which rotors do BG auto enthusiasts prefer?

I ordered them from Amazon awhile ago so I can't return them. I don't know if I should just get the Wagner rotors to match....

First question is are the brake rotors shot or can they be turned <machined to spec>? Second is about the brakes are they high performance or just stock?

Rotors are shot. Both are rusted severely and the right side is chewed to hell. What's currently on the car are some replacements from Belle Tire. The wagner pads I purchased per Rock Auto seem to be on the higher end of their "daily driver" list.

Well i was going to say if they were able to be turned it would save you money since having them turned is usually cheaper than new rotors. As for the brakes i would consider going as close to stock or recommended by toyota. Any choice after that is pretty much a coin toss unless you find a brake set that works with your vehicle. As for the rotors (since i'm assuming a DIY at home thing) the rotor's turned or brand new will need to be cleaned. You can use brake cleaner to clean them or if you want a cheaper alternative soap and water with a scrub brush to remove any small left over bit's of metal dust and foreign objects from them. Wipe dry after cleaning to make sure no water or cleaning detergents are left on them.

Thanks for the tips. My bro in law has everything for diy at home so we'll be set to do it right. I was thinking too it's somewhat a coin toss, unless you go for the expensive high performance brakes. For O'Reilly's, their online store shows only two options for front rotors. BrakeBest (store brand I think) for $30/each or Bosch Quietcast for $76/each. I'll need to do some shopping around.
