Fell skateboarding, my back broke my fall

Landed on my back (on the flat ground thankfully?) just trying to warm up today on a about a 2 foot high rail, it felt awful. My lower left back is swollen, horrible pain from just walking or turning or even trying slowly. From what I am reading it could be a herniated disc... anyone have any experience with back injuries?

I've never had one and I know now they clearly fucking suck. Oh and should I not even be sitting down? I feel ok just sitting.. or laying down.

    Anything else.. nope.

I passed out in the shower once and smacked my lower spine on the faucet on the way down. I got a pinched nerve, which felt like fire being injected into my spine any time I twitched the wrong muscle (A lot, since we use our lower backs for EVERYTHING)

My doctor could only offer me pain pills, my chiropractor fixed it. I was unable to stand up straight when I went in. After a few visits he got me back to normal. It still twinges ever so slightly once in a while, but its pretty much gone.

Edit: As for advice, go to a doctor. At the very least they can tell you what's wrong, and you can proceed from there.

Was it swollen? Because that sounds very similar to the pain I felt... nothing like that shit.

I don't recall. I kept it heavily iced for the 2-3 days it took to decide to see the chiropractor, and that would have reduced the swelling significantly.

They say that's bad, though. Only supposed to ice injuries for a short period.

Edit: It does seem likely that it was swollen, though. That's a pretty standard reaction to injuries of any sort.

Had spinal fusion on my lower back 10 years ago. Pretty obvious but if it gets worse or doesn't subside, you should definitely get it checked out just to make sure it's nothing serious. Is there any pain behind your thighs? I wouldn't have known anything was wrong with my back if not for the pain in the back of my leg. Two vertebrae slipped to the right and were pinching my spinal cord, the pain was so debilitating it was really difficult to walk.

Go to the doctor, don't fuck around with back injuries. This shouldn't even be a question.

It's very difficult to diagnose things over the internet for obvious reasons, especially when it comes to the back because so many things can cause the same pains. Is there a burning in your legs at all? Numbness in your toes? These are common symptoms of a pinched nerve, which can happen with a herniated disc.

Or it could be just that you hit it hard and there's no real damage just a few days of pain! No real way to tell until you get it properly examined.

Since you were skateboarding, I'm going to assume the height wasn't that great, so I would guess that you probably haven't done any permanent damage. Yet. Back injuries are often the kind that, if you don't fix them right away, you're stuck with them for life. That being said, our bodies are pretty resilient. Get it taken care of asap and you should be okay. I know sleeping is going to suck anyway because of the pain, but don't let worry keep you up. Also, as long as you don't leave it on for too long, ice packs are an option for some relief.

Also, for getting around, I used a cane. Seriously. I was 22ish years old walking around with a cane. I'd have laughed if it wouldn't have set my back on fire. It worked great. Didn't need to straighten up at all.

Did you sleep on your back? As far as pain goes I am only feeling it on my lower left back.. the swelling area. When I touch the center of the swollen area.. hurts like a bitch (fire is a pretty accurate description). Going to lay down and ice it down, head to a doctor in the morning.

No insurance and yeah.. from what I am hearing Texas healthcare blows ass. Not sure if it can be worse than California, I was only ever covered for one surgery and it was a done deal. Pretty much told me I could never qualify again for whatever program covered all of it. I am completely clueless as where to go or even start here.

Okay. No insurance. Do you not have a job. If so you can at least go to the ER and have the state pick up the tab.

You should probably just go to an ER. That shit can seriously fuck up your whole life if you don't get it taken care of.

Even if you get screwed, bad credit > not being able to do anything athletic for the rest of your life.

I'm an ER nurse in Texas, just go to the ER. St. David's in Austin has a program to fund hospital bills funded by charitable donations, and there are severe discounts for pts without insurance. EITHER WAY it's not worth risking your ability to function over money. Get your ass to an ER as soon as possible and get whatever tests the doctors want you to get.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the impact itself that hurt his back, but the motions leading to the fall. Basically, he could've pulled a muscle trying to correct himself before falling. When I hurt my back playing football, it was also in the lower left area with the brunt of it maybe being 2-3 inches away from the tailbone at a 45 degree angle. At first it just ached and swelled a bit, but then eventually it knotted up and took like a month to get full, painless motion back.

    But yeah, hit the ER.

Just derping around on Reddit and found this pic... Was also said to be from skateboarding... Really hope you're getting this checked out ASAP. Stupid America not having universal health care, but in an ER you should still get taken care of regardless >.>
