Indian Call Centers Posing as Microsoft Windows Support

Probably the funniest thing I've ever seen. 1 hour and 20 minutes long... shows the whole call. Gets funny when he 'pulls the wool,' so to speak, around 60 minutes... but worth watching the entire thing if you have time. Makes the ending more satisfying.

Oh man, they've cold called me before. Knew it was a scam right away and when they said my Window's PC had a virus I told them that I have a Mac (I don't). They were like "uhhhhhhhhhhhh"

I've been dealing with customers that have been hit with this scam for the past 2 years. It's even older than that from what I've read on forums, something more like 4 years ago they started this using AMMYY to remote desktop in (when they made people Google for the program until "AMMYY scam" became the top result and it detailed exactly what they were doing).

Should be common sense to most techs, but sadly many general consumers don't get that 1) Microsoft will never cold call you, since they charge a fee per tech support call, and 2) they have their own remote desktop program built into Windows that they could use to troubleshoot without you having to install something.

Wow, I've never ever gotten one of these calls before. Would be fun to fuck with them. Bout the only scams I get lately are the text messages saying I won a 500 dollar gift card from Best Buy or Wal-Mart.

Is this an Aussie/UK thing only? I wish they'd call me.

I would have committed hari-kari if I'd had to put up with listening to that Indian accent for that long. No offence to anyone who has an accent like that, but I could barely understand a word he was saying. I regularly get people calling from Indian call centres at work who claim to be calling from a company who will save you money on your utilities. I'm too polite and listen to what they say before declining. The way he said 'right' brought back so many memories, like they expect you to agree when they say it.

Nah, they called my sister a few weeks ago (Norway). She said "Yeah, no, I don't think so" and hung up. I was a proud big brother that day.

    Well Europe anyway.

I haven't heard of this happening in the USA.

They'll call at least once a month for me. Hell they called this morning, so I started talking in gibberish.

I' ve had them call me 3 times within the last year. Both times they've told me that there's a serious virus on my computer and they've been getting messages or feedback from somewhere stating it's infected.

I start off pretty polite by just telling them that I have some experience with computers and I'll take care of the problem myself. One of them got a little lippy with me so I just hung up on them.

I heard about this earlier this year. Here's a good report on it:

I kinda want one of these calls now just so I can start laughing loudly at them.

Seems better than the car insurance scam that I got about 15 calls for over the period of a year......on my do-not-call cell phone number.

I think my favorite part of the whole call is the inauspicious "shit" at being told his computer is "uploading a lot of unwanted malicious files" at 4 minutes. lol

"Sure, just let me get my computer out the oven - one sec" I left the phone on the side and went back to loudly making lunch.

Normally I just cop out with "Sorry, I don't have a computer" and listen to them hang up frustrated.

PS. Finished watching the video, disappointed they didn't go for any of the bait files/folders

Semi bump because I actually got one of these calls the other day. I really wish I recorded this because I was fucking with him so hard.

Instead of saying my computer was compromised or whatever, he was trying to get me to "fix" my computer. After months/years of usage, it gets slowed down and he was more than happy to help me clear the clutter on my PC. With a thick Indian accent. He also refused to give a straight answer regarding where he was from or how he got my number. How does anyone with basic logic fall for this shit?

I actually had something similar happen to me, but not with Microsoft support. This is something that everyone here should look out for and tell other people and clients not to comply with:

I called Cisco about a couple refurbished routers I had purchased that had been flashed/reloaded to factory settings. Upon receiving them I was unable to console/remote into them with the default administrator/root passwords that come preloaded as default. I called because I figured it was some weird combination of admin/admin, or admin/password, whatever passwords they might have reloaded on them and they were unable to help. Frustrated with the Cisco technical support (they were Googleing everything), I just told them I was going to return them back and get new ones.

A few days later, I received a call from an outsourced, Indian technical support call center. They ended up trying to help me in the same way that the Cisco person tried to help me. I was curious to see what they had to say, considering I have been working with Cisco products for years and I know my shit. They assured me they would be able to help me access the router but I had to allow them to remotely control my computer. I tried to let the guy know that he wouldn't be able to troubleshoot the router AND connect up to my computer at the same time he was controlling my computer. He assured me I was wrong, and prompted me to go to some shady IP directed website to download the control software. I laughed and tried out the website; it ended up being some shady VNClite based control program and then something named Cisco.exe tried running.

After all that, he then told me it was going to cost $60 for him to fix my router. I promptly said fuck off and hung up.

Just something to look out for, not sure why Cisco is fucking outsourcing or giving high leveled customers information to shady Indian companies.
