MOTHER 2 Revival
Just what are the “MOTHER” games? To this day, it’s really difficult to answer that.
It’s like the world a child can go on forever talking about when they pull dolls out of toy boxes, old utensils out of kitchens, nuts and bolts out of tool boxes, leaves and flowers out of the yard, and line them up all over the carpet. That’s the feeling in which I made the MOTHER series.
Since I’m an adult, I added some new angles to it and lavished it with secrets and pranks.
Then, many, many friends came over to play, and each with their own way of playing, they took the simple story composed only of a root and stem and added branches and leaves and flowers to make it come alive. So MOTHER really only came to be through the amount of people that have played the game.
In all kinds of circumstances in which I’ve met people, I’ve been told, “I learned about you from the MOTHER games.” This not only happened when the game was first released, but still does, in all the many years since.
All sorts of people share with me their memories of the tiny safety pins and the colored glass shards and the withered leaves I sprinkled in my MOTHER playground. I’ll tell them, “I’m amazed you remember that,” and they gush, “I loved every tiny detail about that world.” I just say, “I did too.”
Oh! Well, maybe that’s it. Maybe I just wanted to make a playground where people would even cherish its unimportant rubbish. It’s as if my friends from all over the world who played the game discovered this theme for me that I didn’t realize before I made it. But that’s true, that what I was going for.
I was plenty adult when I created MOTHER, and now that thirty years have passed since then, I’m that much more of an adult. I think about things now that I didn’t back then.
For example, “What sort of person do I want to die as?” I already have an answer. “Someone whose wake is nice and lively.” What has the deceased spent his life doing? How has he been foolish? What did he enjoy? And how kind was he? He should be in the memories of all kinds of people. And the people left behind would smile and scramble to chat with everyone around them. I want to live a life that can end in a party like that.
Fame, wealth, achievements and records don’t mean much. A man lives inside the stories that other people tell when they start with “One time he…”
Well—it’s not dead, and it’s not human, but I feel MOTHER is like that kind of person.
So, now that you can play MOTHER 2 to your heart’s content, go ahead and try out some new memories as you play alongside other people. I’m happy this day has come. I’m sure the many people involved in the game are, too.
Thank you for everything.
