US - California politician proposes tax on email

    http://dailycaller.com/2013/03/28/ca...-tax-on-email/
    http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/aboutgordonwozniak/

Gordon Wozniak, a Berkeley city councilman, proposed taxing email messages during a recent city council meeting in an effort to reduce the spread of “spam,” or unwanted emails.

Wozniak also said an email tax could raise money to keep the U.S. Postal Service functioning.

“There should be something like a bit tax … [it] could be a cent per gigabit and they would make, probably, billions of dollars a year,” he said.

Wozniak claimed the gigabit tax would prevent scammers from sending spam emails to thousands of recipients at a time.

The Internet Tax Freedom Act, which was passed by former President Bill Clinton, currently bans many forms of Internet taxation. But the act expires next year.

To be fair, did we really want permanent laws about the internet to be happening in the 1990s?

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Well, I mean, no law is permanent. There's always amendments and new laws to counter old laws.

I'm just wondering what is the point of having expiration dates in bills

Our system is intentionally designed to favor stagnation. Expiring bills help (or at least are intended to) bypass this stagnation.

"they would make, probably, billions of dollars a year"
That is my favorite part. I'd really like to see them try and control this asinine idea of email taxation. Sad to say but fk the Post Office, millions of dollars to fund them to lose my packages and not give me refunds. Let em burn.

And that's fine for you, but considering that in its current state, it may stop paying out on benefits to retirees, maybe not let it burn.

Yea, fuck the post office who handles your packages with a lot more care than UPS/Fed-Ex. Fuck those people in the ass.

I'd love to know how they plan to enforce such a law.

I've lost on average 1 package with USPS for every 2-3 UPS/FedEx package I order. I'm also a believer that its not the company but the individuals who mistreat your packages, if that is something that is nurtured by the company is something I can't comment on.

I'd much rather receive a fucked up package which I can dispute, versus not getting a package and being told by the department that it was "left with a neighbor" that has no business receiving packages on my behalf, let alone the package actually be delivered to said neighbor.

    People still email? Seriously.

Only time I open my email is if I'm job searching.

So you're telling me rather than change the working conditions so that workers are happier, more productive, and more likely to produce good results you'd rather shore the operation to someone who could give two fucks because they're global and whether workers are happy or not appear to produce good results?

You know how many times my neighbor received my packages from UPS and I called the hub only to be told "My guys don't do things like that, I can vouch for them so I don't know what your problem is"?

Anecdotal evidence for the win, holy shit. Let's punish an entire workforce because you got your panties in a bunch. Unlike UPS, the USPS has never let me down and I've encountered nothing but pleasant workers since I moved to a different area.
