    Commission Clawbacks

    So I just started working for a wireless provider and had a question. What's the deal with clawbacks? Sounded normal enough at first; you fuck up the sale, corporate has to fix it, they take a percentage of your commission for that sale. Now these kids are telling me they get clawbacks if their till is short, if someone steals something, if they don't use dashes in the cell number on the invoice, etc. Is this shit legal? I'm in Canada for what it's worth.

    Not sure, but from how you explain it they're just charging you for having to fix your input errors into their database. Sounds fucked up, but not illegal. At least not in the states.

    As someone who has done commission sales, they can nail you for just about anything. Price match? Lose some money. Item returned? Lose some money. It sucks, but if you do your job you will be fine.

    we had a whole store get robbed and lost about 15K in merch and the whole store got clawbacks

    some tips from a long time salesman

    1. sell what the customer needs, not what they want. If you sell what they want, they will be back when they realize it isnt what they need (people are dumb)

    2. make sure you know policies inside and out, and quote them verbatim to the customer. This covers your own ass, and make sure your boss knows that you not only know this, but preach it, then when dumb customer comes back saying you didnt say something your boss will have your back.

    3. people are dumb

    4. training videos and sales "classes" are dumb if provided by your company, your company truly believes that they are correct in what they show (they, in most cases are the exact opposite, i used to sell cell phones, att training told us that ALL customers will listen to you when you offer higher data plans because you are the expert, not true, as i said, customers are dumb)

    Yeah they trained me on policies for 3 days and I'm by myself now

    I've never heard the term clawback, but yeah it makes sense to a degree. I sell insurance and if a client cancels their policy before the term is up I have to repay the commission. I don't try to sell to just anyone because lord knows, especially in Michigan, there are tons of people looking to get their tags and drop their policy.

    Jink, that's massively f'd up though.

    Apparently a lot of their clawback policies are illegal but the owner has a team of lawyers and nobody has ever won a labor board suit.

    Glad I don't have to deal with that bullshit. I'm a Regional Sales Manager for a manufacturing company. I have to give back commission if anything is returned that is not deemed to be defective, that's it really.

    The freight cost is high, so I barely ever have to deal with returns.
