    Fuck you Comcast.

So I decided I didn't want to pay Comcast $7+ a month to rent their modem and went out and bought my own. Picked up the Motorola Surfboard that is listed on their Docsis 3.0 list as being a top choice.

Hooked it up last night, had no signal, just the receive light is blinking, let it sit for 30mins and still nothing so I called up Comcast. They told me they had to add it to my account, so I gave them the Mac, s/n and shit. 1hr later still nothing, call them up again, they ask for the same info and say it was never added...1hr later...nothing and I call up again and AGAIN ask for the info and nothing, saying they were now going to send a signal to the modem, but it wasn't being picked up....and I should just let it sit...9hrs later its still not up when I got up for work.

Some things I have read state it could be the dB rate is too high for the modem to pick up on, but I there are no signals shown when I log into the modem, and no logs either....so I have no info to go on.

Maybe the modem is just faulty?

Could be. They should be able to see the modem on their end. Let it sit unplugged for a few minutes and replug it, call them again. If nothing, maybe have them send a tech over to diagnose the problem, since you probably won't have those kinds of tools available. There's a pretty small chance it's the modem being faulty; it could also be the wiring wasn't done correctly, they aren't giving it enough signal, or something wildly different.

That's the modem I use and this is the kind of connection I get

so there are definitely no compatibility issues.

Yeah seems it might be on their end and they just cant push the docsis...I hate having to pay a fee to have the tech come out and check on it though, such a hassle.

With comcast, they don't charge fees if the issue is on their end. If you can prove it's not an issue with your residence you can fight the fee.

Residence = apartment? Or entire complex? Like if the issue is their signal dB is out of the threshold due to some issue with the wiring downstairs that doesn't count against me correct?

You can also add the insurance or w/e they call it for $4/month and after the tech visit drop the coverage. I use the same setup and since the snow and cold hit us in Michigan our connection has been terrible. I usually have to reset my modem once every 30 minutes or so. I've contacted Comcast twice and they say it's "maintenance". Well, it's been that for 10 days now so we're going to wait it out a few more days until we call again.

Tech came by while i'm here at work, wife says he said it was my modem at fault. I spoke to him and asked if he had the same brand on his truck which he didn't of course, but says my signal is strong...so going to return this one and get another from Staples that better fucking work or there will be hell to pay.

I may just get the SB6141 as I hear it has a lot better channel bonding then the SB6121

Damn unlucky. I got the 6141 last year. It's been good, but its activity lights are really fucking bright. I keep mine shielded with the box it was delivered in lol.

Wat. That's some shit. They're usually not that incompetent. At least you don't have to get another modem and go through this rigamarole again.

    Spoiler: show
    Incoming I spoke too soon.

"It's the modem" is always their first line. While renting modems, I replaced my Ubee DOC3 I want to say 5 times. Once they tried to give me something that looked like a cable box from 1985. I'm on hold right now to get some answers regarding the signal constantly dropping.

So was going to have a tech come out and look at why my cable is acting so shitty, woke up today and it dawned on me "Maybe..its because I have an HDMI cable in the box and i'm not using the composite?" Sure enough, soon as I plugged in composite and took out the HDMI the cable comes in just fine...fucking comcast....

Comcast a few years ago flat out told me the HDMI boxes don't work unless it's a DVR model. Got free DVR for like 3 years since my computer only had one component hookup for hd and my wii was already going in there.

So on a whim I decided to see if Verizon serviced my apartment. We were told that only Comcast worked here, which I thought was kind of odd since the entire town is wired for Verizon/Comcast, and all the homes surrounding my apartment complex all can get Verizon. So looked online and it seems Verizon services my apartment just from going through their initial "Can you have interwebz there?" tool on the website.

Is that usual? For an apartment complex to either only allow a single provider? Or maybe they are just getting kickbacks from Comcast? I mean they even have their "official" comcast guy...who charges $10 more a month for all the packages...

Yes. My apartment only allows for cable from Cox Communications ("they laid out all the lines"). Unsurprisingly, my cable is shit tier and I'm paying out the ass for it.

It's also against the law to do this, from my understanding, but who's going to sue?
