    Rifftrax

not sure how many of you remember a little show called

    http://www.justpressplay.net/images/...3k/mstlogo.jpg

In my opinion, Mystery Science Theater is the most unique, creative and hilarious TV show to ever grace television. There have only been two shows I have made time in my life to watch on a regular basis, MST3K and Twin Peaks.

Anyway, those that dont know, MST3K was a show where several comedians would make fun of bad movies while silhouetted at the bottom of the screen (two of the actors would be operating puppets). Anyway, if you haven't seen the show poke around on YouTube, you can find stuff, if not full episodes then at least some great clip reels.

For those that have seen the show, the 3 of the guys responsible for Mystery Science Theater 3000 have been running this great site called

    http://www.rifftrax.com/themes/zen/images/logo.png

Rifftrax takes the great hilarious riffing from MST3K and puts the screws to new movies. The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, X-Men, The Dark Knight, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Iron Man, they all get a turn. They have something like 50 or 60+ movies they've done over there.

They also will have guest riffers, like Jurassic Park is with Weird Al, Willy Wonka has Neil Patrick Harris, and Troll 2 has Rich "Lowtax" Kyanka of somethingawful.com

So, the way it works is you have to own/rent the movie and purchase the riff track, usually a MP3. The MP3 syncs with the movie and it's just like watching MST3K again. Whats really cool is you can now download their custom player that will load in the riff track with the DVD and sync it automatically.

There are a bunch of preview clips to check out on the site. Personal favorites: Transformers, The Dark Knight, ID4, Lord of the Rings, and Willy Wonka.

    Rifftrax is freaking awesome.

Their player is usually a little glitchy for me, have to jump chapter forward/back usually to get a good synch.

Anyway, if you haven't seen the show poke around on YouTube, you can find stuff, if not full episodes then at least some great clip reels.

That is unfortunate that those episodes are missing. There is a decently-well seeded 135gb torrent of every episode ever, except those.

As I understand it, nobody has a copy of those three. Or, if there is, they've never shared with tape circles/online/etc.

Only 1 person has those tapes...Jim Mallon. I have a feeling they'll be released one day. Joel showed parts of the pilot at a convention as the proof of concept for MST3k. Pretty interesting to see how the show evolved.

So do we have to buy the mp3? It's funny and all but I'm too much of a jew to shell out extra cash for it.

Yeah, I've seen that footage, it's on the site I linked to at least. I'm surprised that they haven't released them prior if he actually has them, as I'm sure the fan interest would be high. Perhaps there are rights issues.

I'm sure someone, somewhere has some of them shared...but the proper thing to do is to pay for 'em. A few bucks for a DRM-free file isn't that bad, especially considering how much of their work most fans have probably enjoyed for free. Personally, that's one reason I don't mind paying for them.

I bet the search engine of any torrent site, rapidshare, etc etc, even google could answer that question friendo.

Well, MST3k or Rifftrax, you can have parts of the movie that are more miss than hit. On the whole though, good stuff >.>

Sometimes it just doesn't click off the bat though, the creators even said that about MST3k. Like, a certain joke/reference/etc would just work for someone, and then they'd "get it".

Coming to the National Geographic channel on April 1, 2014
In the not-too-distant future (next Sunday A.D.), there was a guy named Joel, not too different from you or me. He worked at Gizmonic Institute, just another face in a red jumpsuit. He did a good job cleaning up the place, but his bosses didn’t like him so they shot him into space.

That’s pretty much all the set-up you need to know for Mystery Science Theater 3000, which popularized the still-popular trend of comedic riffing. The show’s host, with the help of his robot pals, would watch old and forgotten B-movies and gently (or harshly) mock them and parody them in short skits. The sets were wobbly, the props were cheap and the robots weren’t created using state-of-the-art CGI, but Mystery Science Theater 3000 is still fondly remembered by fans to this day.

The show currently lives on in RiffTrax, a site in which the stars of Mystery Science Theater 3000 – Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett – provide comedic commentaries for both old movies and recent blockbusters like The Avengers and Twilight. After being off TV screens for almost 15 years, however, the Mystery Science Theater 3000 crew are making a three-episode comeback… on National Geographic.

According to Zap2It the MST3K revival will actually air under the RiffTrax name, but Murphy will be reprising his role as Tom Servo and Corbett will be playing Crow T. Robot. Whether this means that the full show format will return – complete with their silhouettes projected onto the screen and the comedy skits in between – remains to be seen, but the riffing subject will apparently be some kind of TV programming.

Despite the change in name, the RiffTrax commentaries are still just as entertaining as the old Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes and the hosts’ return to television is very welcome, even if it is only for a few episodes.

This coming April Fool’s Day is already shaping up to be a memorable one (even if you know some of the surprises going into it). Rifftrax (Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy from the legendary MST3K) are set to do a Total Riff Off on National Geographic programming. So, there will be a good ol’ riffin on such things like “Man vs. Balrog” and more.

For all the times that narration, voiceover, and human plot lines have been added in over footage of animals in the wild for the entertainment of kids (see: Meerkat Mansion), this will be a more than welcome funny version of that idea. Also, it’s worthwhile to catch the Rifftrax crew whenever, especially when they get a chance to return to your TV.

As of now, mark down April 1st at 8 PM ET on National Geographic Channel for Total Riff Off.
