For those that don't know this is a sequel to the original Cosmos hosted by the renowned astronomer Carl Sagan. It aired in the 1980's on PBS and was one of the most influential documentaries on science ever produced, and one of the most widely watched. Personally, it is one of the reasons I became so interested in astronomy.

The new series was co-produced by Ann Druyan (Sagan's widow), National Geographic and Fuzzy Door productions and will be hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson and will premiere simultaneously on ten Fox channels and National Geographic channel.

I heard about this, and some a few commercials...looked pretty awesome. I love space and Star Trek, so if Brannon Braga is involved, it should be solid.

I heard they're having a showing at SXSW with Neil deGrasse Tyson -- coincidentally in town so looking forward to catching it.

Isn't Seth Macfarlane involved in some capacity also?

I think, he's responsible for some of the animation segments (but it's very much not like what he's normally doing).

But mainly he's the one who convinced FOX to back the project.

Seth MacFarlane is executive producer and basically the only reason the show is happening. He dropped some money in funding for it and brought people in to meet the heads of Fox to help get the show greenlit.

He is also a HUGE fan of the late Carl Sagan and donated an unspecified amount of money to help obtain over 800 boxes of his notes (some from when he was a kid) so that they could be included in the Library of Congress.

Also they had a screening of this on Tuesday here in the Los Angeles area and my girlfriend got us tickets but something came up and we couldn't go

So good. Hardcore feels at the end. Extra feels since I remember rewatching Cosmos at the beginning of my first semester in my Astrophysics degree.

Now I get new Cosmos to play me out on to my PhD so that hopefully (albeit on a smaller scale) I can inspire a love of the universe in students the way it was inspired in me by Sagan, Tyson, and so many others.

The show was even better than I imagined. That Cosmic Calender really is brilliant in explaining scale. I hope they do an episode based on this little buried nugget of hopes and dreams that I wasn't aware of until recently

Also also, the show I’ve been working on has started airing! It’s a 13-part miniseries rebooting Carl Sagan’s Cosmos series, hosted by Neil DeGrasse Tyson airing every Sunday on Fox! We’ve been working on it like crazy and I’m super excited that people can finally enjoy the fruits of our labour!
