Lost FFXI, trouble reinstalling (posting on behalf of someone with no 10 posts)

Had someone drift into chat for help. I wasn't able to assist much, hope someone here is more knowledgeable on the process. He doesn't have 10 posts, so cannot create a thread (read from bottom to top...)

    He downloads from the site...

I suggested (read from top to bottom):

[01:04:25] The Stig: what other issue were you having with that download?
[01:05:34] xbriden: if I just open the FFXISETUP.exe it'll pop up an error saying "No such Archives"
[01:05:53] The Stig: you downloaded all 3 files right? (sounds silly but gotta check)
[01:05:55] xbriden: and if i download all 4, and open FFXISETUP.exe, it'll just have an error saying can't read files
    [01:06:01] xbriden: it's total 4
    [01:06:04] The Stig: 4 * yeh
    [01:06:05] The Stig: hm
    [01:06:06] xbriden: including the ffxisetup
[01:06:14] xbriden: redownloading again right now
[01:06:18] The Stig: have you still got all 4?
[01:06:19] xbriden: even restart the pc
    [01:06:20] The Stig: oh ok
[01:06:22] The Stig: are you on Win7?
    [01:06:25] xbriden: win8
    [01:06:27] The Stig: hm
[01:06:30] The Stig: should be the same ... maybe
[01:06:33] The Stig: when you get it all
[01:06:36] The Stig: right click the setup
[01:06:39] The Stig: and do "run as admin"
[01:06:42] The Stig: sometimes does the trick

That setup on their website is the one to use. It's the same one they've had since SoA came out, and works perfectly fine with 8/8.1. This setup requires nothing else; it is completely and totally self sufficient for a full game. Make sure it is actually downloading completely. You can use hashtab on windows to check the file hashes (these should be good, tested the archives and they decompressed and went into installing without error). Really wish they listed them on their website, at least the CRC32.

    Spoiler: show

    FFXISETUP.exe
    CRC32: 314BFE72
    MD5: C24E675DF4B52F5B826AF7FC1F47DB8C
    SHA-1: 56954AF6509DEA2A3C3AF2840E2F3CAC70BC7ABF

    FINALFANTASYXI.Data.001
    CRC32: 30B035DA
    MD5: 49EAA0EAC8957B4F293316E3F74476E6
    SHA-1: 7F4D2836C1BB6629E108D50FC793EF0703BB6AB8

    FINALFANTASYXI.Data.002
    CRC32: EA68AADD
    MD5: ABE7C0A956DDFC6F61472639B819F60A
    SHA-1: D12831CB09140F307B5954A98FC9B52977F07E69

    FINALFANTASYXI.Data.003
    CRC32: 05DA103F
    MD5: 1220266CD59D32602F864D990079032D
    SHA-1: EDC92A5AA712BC97477303846C3F049B5894AA19

The setup will then decompress into the full installation media with each individual xpac installer, and then run a prog that runs each installer individually automatically. Run POL and let it update, logout and run the game's config, modify your crap and save, now log back in and start the game (without windower/ashita), and let the game update. Or go looking for a zip of the update files posted somewhere in the ffxi section, unzip it correctly, and then have it update.

add: the setup will decompress into a folder named "extracted" in whatever folder the setup was run. If you cancel, those extracted files will be deleted, so copy them if you want them in that manner before canceling or finishing, but it shouldn't matter much at all. The setup takes care of everything to do with installing the game.

I can confirm the link you posted has the exact same files as the one on the ffxi site, just as one big archive that unzips into those four exact files (same resulting file hashes too). I let it download overnight and checked heh; at least there's a second source for it.
