Would like opinions on 2 trucks.

I'll be in the market soonish for a new truck. My dad wants to take my current truck to mexico and help me get a new one. It's a 2007 Single Cab Tacoma and I never had any issues with it, but I'd like more.

It's between the 2016 Tacoma TRD Offroad and the 2016 Chevy Colorado Z71, both 4 door crew/double cab 4x4. Obviously my first choice would be the Tacoma, reputation for being reliable and (may) last longer. However it didn't fit me well, didn't have a lot of space. Then I looked into the Colorado and loved how it felt inside and it checked all of my boxes, but all I keep hearing from my dad and random people is "Don't buy a chevy they aren't reliable" "You're going to have problems" etc etc.

I've been researching a lot, each has their share of problems. Going to tacomaworld people are always like "Why wouldn't you get a tacoma" and going to coloradofans people are like "Colorado #1 m8, tacoma is overrated". And the neutral people "As long as you take care of it, any truck will last". Just curious about BGs opinion on the matter.

Opinion here, but if you are considering a Toyota truck and have any other brand of truck on your list of considerations, you can just toss the list and buy the Toyota. Unless towing capacity is a consideration. Then you should go domestic.

Not experienced with trucks at all, but I drive a F150 and Sierra occasionally (borrow them from friends if things need moving) and I'm really liking the F150.

My supervisor drives a Tacoma though, and he loves that thing. He's your pro-typical middle aged family man who drives out to his cabin regularly in the middle of nowhere, so it definitely gets him places.

I don't know offhand about this year, but last year or two I think ram/Chevy/ford have all dominated Tacoma in most areas and rankings.

I'd get the Chevy if this coworker I hate didn't have one already.

The correct answer is obviously to import a Toyota Hilux.

The new Tacomas are pretty amazing, but I'm biased and don't like large trucks. That being said, if you want a full size truck get a Silverado. Have two in the family and never had problems with them.

Imo, I'd go with the Tacoma as most things are the same, but the Tacomas are an easy resale if you want to get something new in a few years. Plus the aftermarket community is going to be widespread, and likely won't run into a dealer only part.

From the AAA side of things we tend to see more breakdowns on the Colorado than the Tacoma. This is also partially due to less Tacomas being sold. The major factors for you are what your plans are for said truck. If it's for towing/hauling capacity the Colorado(and all domestic brand trucks for the most part) destroy the Tacoma. If you're just looking to buy a truck and occasionally use it to haul something then the Tacoma would be fine. If I'm not mistaken I believe the Tacoma also has a lower price.

I would research the Nissan trucks. In the last 3 or 4 years they have consistently been rated higher than the Toyotas but they are still quite a bit cheaper as they don't have the hype surrounding them that Toyotas do. They rate higher in every category with the exception of interior build quality.

When we were searching for a new truck we test drove quite a few Nissans and Toyotas and settled on the Nissan.

For the record we have goats and regularly tow a trailer and fill the back of the truck with bales of hay. We can stack 14 bales of hay on the back of the truck with no issues.

We also live on a dirt road and in a rural area so this truck is used as a truck and is off road frequently.

Having driven 50+ full-sized trucks, my top two brands are Chevy and Toyota. I think the interior in the Silverado is superior, but that might not matter to you.

The only problem I've ever seen on a Tundra is the AC broke after 150k miles. The Silveradoes tended to have issues a little sooner (85-100k miles), but were MUCH less cared for. All trucks were driven daily in the oilfield.

I find Toyota's to have the best "finish". I don't know if the Colorado uses the same engines as the Silverado so I don't know if those engines/transmissions are as tested as what they've had for a while. Generally trucks are the one domestic thing you can actually have for 10+ years and have little issues.

We bought a 2016 Ford F150 in June, and we love it. My husband is very research 50x longer than you actually spend looking at the thing kind of guy. We sat in it for 5 minutes, drove it around the block and did the paperwork, and we were in it.

Its really a matter of opinion thing, and he can tell you books more than I can, but If he chose the F150, it was the best on the market. So far no major problems, just a few cosmetic things which the dealership fixed for free. Can't say the same for Chevy, I have heard of some very major recalls of their new release trucks the past year. One including the airbag I think. Do a lot of research, if you're just buying a mall crawler, then it's really whatever. But if your going to tow or do any offroad, you need to do a lot of your own research.

My dad used to own a Tacoma, they are good, but the new ones are quite tiny. If you want a TON of space, at least step foot in a F150, I'm shocked, it's like a mini apartment in there. lol.

You should definitely decide between midsize or full size first because there is a big difference and the best brand for full sized truck might not be the same as the best for a mid sized truck.
