For those that were interested, it's reviewing really really well. Floating around 90% on opencritic.

PC version is apparently immaculate, no stuttering/fast loading times/etc, scales super well all the way up to path traced/ray reconstruction glory.

Quantum Break wasn't bad, but compared to Max Payne 1/2, Alan Wake, and Control yeah it's a bit of a turd.

I had some days off and remembered I had Alan Wake Remastered on Epic, powered through to refresh my memory for to 2 over the weekend.

I keep seeing weird inconsistencies (Odin's eye patch on the wrong eye) and I'm not sure if it's intentional or not.

But like 2-3 hours in and this game is great shit, and holy fuck are the graphics amazing. All the references to the Federal Bureau of Control and Control itself are also great stuff. Also clearly echoing Max Payne pairing up Sam Lake with James McCaffrey's voice again. Plus a Shawn Ashmore cameo

This game is an extreme love letter to long time Remedy fans.

Ok this might honestly top BG3 based entirely on the second chapter of Wake's story (the game has you playing as two characters that you can swap back and forth between)

    Light non story spoiler
    Spoiler: show
full on rock opera musical, incredible

This is the most Remedy game Remedy has ever made. Sam Lake had to be on an acid trip the entire time he was writing it.

They were clearly determined to outdo the Ashtray Maze from Control and absolutely nailed it.

How lost will I be if the last time I played the OG was at launch and know nothing about it is the real question?

The story takes place 13 years after the OG (same as the time frame between the actual releases) and it's framed with that in mind. It explains it pretty well and from what I've seen so far the gaps in knowledge you have get filled in through the two stories being played out.

There's direct and indirect references to American Nightmare, Quantum Break, Max Payne, and Control throughout the game as well. I'd hope/assume you'd have played control so you know what the FBC and Ahti are, and who Scratch (American Nightmare and the Alan Wake DLC) is.

Beat it, man I really hope it's not 13 years for another one or maybe the eventual DLC for this one will close the story.

Still lots of hanging plot threads.

So uh. I seven seas'd it, played it for about 25 minutes, realized it was excellent, uninstalled and bought it.

Game is fucking excellent. Still super early on, just finished Alan's first "part" game is super fucking weird. Glad I watched a bunch of lore videos this weekend before starting

    Spoiler: show
When I heard the singing and saw the closet I was like... OH SNAP. Sure enough it was the janitor from Control

I'm sure this is just the beginning

The lore for long time Remedy fans is great shit. Obviously all the major tie ins to Control and the previous Alan Wake games, plus stuff like Dark Place Casey clearly being Max Payne, Mr Door has been referenced before in Control, and Saga/FBI Casey were part of an Easter egg in Quantum Break (though amusingly Saga was white then)

I won't post since it's a spoiler for people who haven't played, but if you lookup Old Gods of Asgard on YouTube they posted an official music video for the uh.. big scene.

so, the ending kind of pissed me off, but the music in this game was top tier, especially most of the after chapter songs.
