Question about PS2 fix

I recently realized after I had to reinstall FFXI on my PS2 that it is fucked up lol. I went to install and I couldn't read the disc, so I started looking around the internet for ways to fix it. I have the -30001(gets disc read errors the most) model if that helps >.> It can read CD based games(5/5 of mine read) but not any DVD based games(1/10+ of mine read) so I was thinking it might be the voltage for the DVD reading. If anyone has any idea how to fix this it would be much appreciated. Not getting a decent computer until atleast this summer or later so still need my PS2 to play FFXI.

I've never actually done this, but my brother did using this guide. It sounds difficult when you actually open it up, but my brother said he did it without any trouble.
