I guess it depends on where you live. In NJ I am pretty sure that they have to post a sign or statement on premises that states "Old or damaged parts will be made available to you upon request".

There are some services where you can't get any items back because of hazardous waste, like the old oil, or in this case, the old transmission fluid. Unless they're being watched by someone who knows what to look for, they could get away with saying they changed it and nobody would ever know.

Checking the oil dipstick or the transmission fluid dipstick before and after should be a good indicator of whether or not the service was performed. Before it's changed they'll both look dirty, and after there should be a noticeable difference leaning towards a lot cleaner looking sample of the fluid. There might be better ways to verify the services were performed when it comes to fluid changing, but that's what I can think of off the top of my head.

i remember one of my radiator hoses blew and a shop wanted to charge me 150 bucks to replace it (it was right on top and easily accessable). they quoted me like 50bucks for the hose.

i went to autozone and bought it for $17 (thats including the hose lube) and took 15min to replace it.

Most things on a car are like that. The only time I've ever taken my car in for work is to have a transmission rebuilt, something there's no way I can do. Most people aren't that lucky but there is alot of truth to the saying "the most valuable asset in life is a mechanic you can trust"

I agree. I'm lucky enough that my daddy and my grandpa are mechanics, so if something is wrong with my car, I either know how to fix it myself, or I can tell them whats wrong and they can do it and show me how in the process. It's getting harder and harder to find good honest mechanics these days, because they take advantage of your ignorance.

I let all my friends know that I know a bit about cars, and if something is wrong, to come to me before they go and spend a ton of money when it could have been prevented. Some of the guys are kinda embarrased about a girl working on their car, but then they remember or I remind them how much money they're not wasting or getting ripped off, and they tend to lighten up.

Its mostly these big businesses that try and rip you off. I live by a couple of mexicans who run a mechanic shop out of their garage down the street from me, and everyone loves them. Its people like that, or small businesses who wont rip you off nearly as much, because they need the customers, and wouldn't want to risk you finding out they raped your wallet, and then they'd be screwed.

You can always ask for the old oil and transmission filter back. There is pretty much no point in getting either of those services done if you're not going to change the filter. That transmission fluid suck thing is the biggest joke ever...if they are ONLY sucking the fluid out, the filter still needs to be changed.

It makes me kinda happy to know that the mechanic shop I worked at for 4 years never onced did this. We did some illegal things, such as rigging things to work instead of doing it the 'proper' way, but even when we did that we always told the customers beforehand. They usually didn't care because the choices were "hey we can use zip ties and charge you 5$ or get an actual new part for 50$ + labor..."

Hey and there is nothing wrong with that Daydreamer, and its good to know shortcuts and loopholes like that that work, as long as you let people know beforehand. If a part costs 300 bucks, but you can fix it without it for 10, and the car won't blow up, crash, or otherwise fuck up because of it, then I say go for it, and the customer will almost always agree.
