    FFXII 16:9 vs 4:3 displays

It looks like the 16:9 aspect ratio of FFXII actually trades off visibility when comparing to the normal 4:3 aspect ratio. A widen visibility could be a good thing.

Widescreen really makes FFXI work. The party and menu's down the right side cut a lot of the screen off (unless you're running 2kx2k) You can see so much more of zones it really makes it worthwhile.

I have 16:10 on my laptop 1440x900 and its great when camping NM's you can see much more in your peripherals that you get a better chance of seeing them pop.

In windower/FFXI cant you fake widescreen by telling the .ini to load the window in a certain res, then changing the ratio in FF?

I've always wanted to try it but I don't know what sizes to use (still using my bomb monitor that shuts itself off when im doing something important).

    Short answer: Yes.
Long Answer: You can actually choose an aspect ratio. If you go into one of the config screens you'll see an aspect ratio slide-bar over to the far left. If you slide it to the far right you get 16:10 aspect ratio (I believe, it maybe the standard 16:9 but I remember it being different, either way...). You can select the ratio you like the best then you need to calculate the screen size. Lets use 16:10 just as an example. Use the width you'd like to see (If you're running 1024x768 (it's my laptop res at work -.-) so you want it to be 992px wide. The height you need would be 992 x 9 / 16 = 620, so the resolution you would enter in the ini would be 992x620 which would give the proper ratio.

(Tip: If you use excel, just make two columns with 16 in the first and 10 in the second. Add 16 to the number above in the 16 column and add 10 to the number above in the 10 column. You'll end up with a list of 16:10 px sizes.)

    ex.
    16 10
    32 20
    48 30
    64 40
    80 50
    96 60
    112 70
    128 80
    144 90

Edit: Thinking about it, it would be 16:10, PC uses a 1:1 pixel, where NTSC broadcast uses 1:0.9 which would distort a 16:10 image into 16:9.

Conversely, you can always just set the Background Aspect Ratio in-game to 16:9. Good for the claim-wars, you get an extra little bit of viewspace on the sides.

    (Misc.2 menu btw)

Wait, what's going on? Even if you don't have a widescreen monitor you can set FFXI to a widescreen reso and it'll look like steamy sex?

Ya :D We're tricking FFXI into thinking it's playing on a widescreen resolution, big thanks to Aodh's post on how to get it working.

Just keep in mind when you get in FF to go and set the ratio to 16:10.

I dont think I can go back to 4:3 after playing this style, hell, it makes me wanna buy a widescreen monitor.

My laptop has a widescreen display and is capable of having a rez of 1920x1200

    http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/3...0009mt3.th.jpg

One is done with an aspec ratio of 4:3 and the other is 16:9. (modified using ffxi and not photoshop). I'm sure I can get the top parts to show (Like the screenshot) but I will prob screw it up because I'd have to restart pol and it will screw up the repositioning.

It made me buy a 43" Widescreen HD TV First widescreen play I had was on my laptop, started camping with it and it's really nice to see all of Aery at once (as long as there's less than 150 people there).

Edit: Take some pics in battle with the menus up. Then do the same on 4:3 resolution, it's hard to imagine the game not being designed for widescreen after seeing the difference. For those who aren't trying this, in battles and alliances in Widescreen, you keep a large amount of your visible window open. And since I'm so very very bored at work...

The boxes account for the space taken up by the menu's in battle, not to mention that the frame is actually closer than when you're idle so you perspectively see less.

You're a bit off? It's not perfect, I used the width of the HP bar on the left to account for the menu/HP/MP/TP bars on the right. I am at work so I can't take SS's and it was the best I can do from here.

I'm confused, what config utility are you using to change these settings?
