    RPG Maker

Didn't want to bump a 5 year old thread.

I was wanting to look into and mess with an RPG Maker game. I don't want to get too serious with it, as it's just something to do until all the console games start rolling in (unless it turns out to be a whole lot of fun.).

There's like 6 different versions and apparently newer doesnt mean better with these games as each new version seems to be completely different and each have their own pros and cons in different departments.

I was wondering what people opinions were on which one was the overall better in terms of freedom to do things, resources, and user-friendly?

If anyone actually still plays these.
Seeing an RPG Maker on the list of supposed leaked games for Vita piqued my interest.

I would recommend XP - most flexible one overall imo. VX is a simplified version in many ways.

You can get a full version via torrent.

RPGMaker VX is (imo) the way to go. It's chibi style characters are reminiscent of SNES RPG and the charsets are higher res than XP. Map editor on VX is not as good as XP I guess, but it's definitely a lot easier to use and make cool maps in a very short time.

I use it a lot and am on my second game with it, so if you have any other questions about it let me know!

I used to play around with RPG Maker 2 on the PS2 a lot, it wasn't too hard to work with. I only stopped because at the time I didn't have a keyboard so punching in things with my controller was a real pain in the ass. From what I read though, if you want a real easy RPG Maker to play with, go with RPG Maker 3 (also on PS2). People have said it's somewhat limited, but you could still make something fun.

I personally prefer vx but I never used xp for long. There are a lot of scripts for different battle systems for both. VX's mapping can be a pain at times since it uses an autotile feature but there is always a work around.

Downloaded VX to try it. I figured out how to make a map... and that's about it lol. been messing around with it and can't find a way to set up NPCs or how to put together battles or anything. help guide from the game didn't help any, and the wikia for it isn't of much help either. I'd prefer not to spend 10 hours just trying to figure everything out :/

edit: oh.... enemy battle encounters are something you set when you 1st create the map.

Holy shit, I can't remember how long I spent figuring out how to change the battle system in RM2k lol. Good times, I might just download this again to fuck around with.

Hell yeah, I remember I created my own battle system from scratch with the use of pics and variables. Also had it made Crono Cross style where the enemy encounters began with coming in contact with the NPC's on screen instead of random encounters. Shit was fun as fuck back in the day.

VX is good but I fucking hate the fact that you can't change tilesets without the swap tileset script. I don't know why they fucking took that out, that shit was even in RPGMaker2k3.

Anyway, it's pretty easy to do. Making a game that is. If you need VX scripts I got the hookups.

Which is the one that had no player battle sprites?

i want to avoid that one. I dont spend 20 minutes making an Animation just right to not even have it show in battle

You can use Takanas or Yanflys SBS systems. They have battle player sprites, although they use the overworld ones. With a few scripts you can get weapons and what not to show up as well, and also movement to enemies and etc.

seems complicated, is it rough to install/set up? I mean, My knowledge of these things is pretty basic, Anything short of a detailed guide of copy > Paste will likely fry my small brain :X.

And i wouldnt mind using World-Sprites, Would give it a FF1/2 feel.

Once you get the hang of things, I would highly recommend Yanfly's scripts, as they are pretty useful. Though I'm not too big on what the new and latest scripts are since I do a lot of things myself. So other then Yanfly's, idk what else is good unless you're looking to build something advance with events lol.

If people actually want, I can write up a good tutorial on how to build some basic stuff with events. (And when I refer to events, I mean using RPG Maker's basic functions rather then opening up the scripting tool and going in and doing stuff with Ruby/RGSS2)

Also for different battle systems from scripts, depending on how advance it is it may be just taking one script, copy > paste into the script editor. The more unique battle systems though may require you to go in after copy >pasting it in, and editing some variables. They usually have good instructions commented into the script at the top on how to go about it.

I remember creating a big arena in one of them, That allowed you to fight a monster, get a Drop from him, and with that in your inventory allow you to fight a harder monster and so on and so forth (Like the VNM System in FFXI)

So many fun memories of that game. Might buy it in the future if i get some money. Or go the Torrent way...

I remember in RM2K, using the universal database was the easiest way to write a custom battle-system and being able to tailor it to specific events. Once the basic script for the system was done it was just a matter of creating player/monster data, tweaking whatever variables you needed for the area/mob, and importing it into the battle-system.

I haven't fucked with any RPG maker in probably 10 years but this is how I remember it at least.

The newest engine IIRC is Yanfly Melody. I think her site went down months ago and that stalled progress. Either way apparently she's a FFXI player because a lot of her script images referenced FFXI skills (like Benediction etc). XD

Installing scripts is easy. If you find RPG Maker VX doesn't do something, just find a script to do it. I even found a fucking Multiplayer script a few days ago. Would totally use it if it wasn't so ungodly complicated.
