    "Must Buy" Comics

So, Captain America is dead... and past topics as well have given me the impression that I am far from the only one here that picks up a few books every week/couple of weeks.

What are you reading? What is coming down the line that you are looking forward to?

Myself, having just kind of re-found the comics world after being pretty absent for the last few years (read quite a few growing up) i am just all over the map right now, trying to find those select few must reads.

So far, been reading the following:

The Walking Dead ~ Robert Kirkman
Loving this entire story... sure maybe there are just tons of Zombie books out there, Zombie movies, Zombie everything, but i really feel like he is just the kind of amazing writer that can make a somewhat over saturated "genre" feel brand new. Twists and turns, great great writing.

    Invincible ~ Kirkman again!
Again, just your average boy discovers super human abilities, but Kirkman just knows how to turn something tried and true, into something amazing. Not as excited about this every few weeks as The Walking Dead, but I am definitely a fan of it.

The Dark Tower ~ Peter David (words) / Jae Lee (pictures)
So far this looks to be an amazing 7 issue series. I have read the books, but I think even those of you that have no idea what the Dark Tower story is all about would be well off to pick this up. Jae Lee, as always is dropping amazing lines on these pages, and Richard Isanove's colors are no less impressive.

    • Osamu Tezuka's Buddha (manga) Website
I just started reading these, and so far i am enjoying them. I dont read much Manga at all, and this actually seems less Manga-ish than most. Osamu Tezuka is the artist behind Astro Boy, and the original Metropolis comic.

Shaolin Cowboy ~ Geoff Darrow (opening dialog in each issue is written by the Wachowski Brothers)
This was just an impulse buy, based solely on the fact that after flipping through a few pages, i was immediately drawn to the artwork. Surely that was because the artwork very much reminds me of Moebius's style, and Nausicaa was one of the first comics i read when i was little, and the US release had a poster by Moebius in it...

The Pirates of Coney Island ~ Rick Spears
This is another one that sucked me in on aesthetics alone, but i have found a decent enough story to back them up.

And a few others that I am reading
    The Invisibles ~ Grant Morrison
Welcome to Tranquility ~ Gail Simone / Art and cover by Neil Googe

And possibly the strangest book i have read...

    Alan Moore's The Lost Girls
(wiki link is SFW - no images, the book itself is very much NSFW. )

I dunno about current series, but I liked old Deadpool, Spawn and Aliens vs Predator. Havent read many comics for a few years, went more towards manga, and now nothing, reading comics is 'bleh'. I need motion now a days D:

I'll keep an eye out for the Dark Tower books at least, be interesting to see how they're done.

Hrm. Lately I've been digging into old Milestone books that I remember reading as a kid, Blood Syndicate in particular. Very underrated stuff.

The Dark Tower books (2 of 7 was just released) are excellent. If you are a fan of Jae Lee, there is that. If you are a fan of the actual books by King there is that.

King is working very closely with Marvel on these, and the vocab/writing by Peter, so far, is very impressive. Add Lee's style to that and you have no real reason to pass these up if any of the above interests you in the slightest.

The Boys is one that is really good right now, and it's drawn by Derrick Robertson if you like gore at all you know who I'm talking about.

Ooh, Garth Ennis eh? I will have to check this out. Looks there is or will be a trade out. Hmm, i am not having much luck finding out who publishes this. Is it Wildstorm? Was it just a limited run and now in hiatus? >.<

    Edit: Ah... =(

The collection of said issues was also canceled. However, Robertson has said "DC is being good about reverting our rights so we can find a new publisher and we're in the process of doing that now". Ennis has released a statement saying he has had a lot of interest from a couple of publishers so issue #7 and a trade of the first six issues should be available "in a matter of a few months". Also while Darick Robertson is currently on exclusive contract to DC he will get special dispensation to continue working on The Boys.

As of February 7, 2007, the series has been picked up by Dynamite Entertainment.
Still not finding it on Dynamite's site. Do you know if there are recent issues or if it is still in transition?

Planet Hulk and Annihilation are the two best things going for Marvel atm.

52 is pretty okay, well, mainly anything involving Black Adam. The latest issue was just awesome.

The Boys is incredible, but unless you have a really great comic shop chances are you won't find the back issues, it was a hot book up until wildstorm cut it's own balls off and let it go. No idea when the new publisher is going to start it up again (issue 7 is for all intents and purposes done, just needs distribution).

Go grab global freqency, the trades are all very good, ditto for Planetary.

The book I'm reading now is: New Universal. Good stuff if you've like Warren Ellis up until now.

Hey, OP! If you like Garth Ennis check out Ghost Rider: Trail of Tears. Issue 2 just came out, it's fantastic so far.

Comics that I'm currently collecting monthly:

    New Avengers
Started at issue 27 and it's great. Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Ronin, Spider-Woman, Doctor Strange, and Wolverine are the New Avengers still unregistered and fighting crime.

    Thunderbolts
A team of super villains including Green Goblin and Venom are now registered with the government to track down unregistered heroes. It's a good read, pretty visceral though.

    Dark Tower
    As said above, fantastic.

    Looking forward to:

    Nova
If you read Annihilation, this is the continuation of Nova's story.

    Silver Surfer
    Planet Hulk

Trade Paperbacks that you should get

    Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage

    Infinity Gauntlet

    Frank Miller's: Ronin

Marvel Essentials (Collection books of old Marvel comics, black and white, but oh well. Currently there are Essentials books for Avengers, Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, etc.)

One of the greatest story arcs of X-men I have ever read

I had all the books that tied-in with that arc

It was mind-blowingly numb to read greatness
