To Toth/Elmer or whoever it may concern: A PUP question

I have my WAR and MNK at 18-20ish range.

Should I level both of them or can I get away with just one? I'd like be as good as possible, but I don't want to make too much of stretch. If I can get away with one, which one should I level?

I have never seen a pup sub monk after level 30 or so? What does /mnk offer the job that is worthwhile after pup gets martial arts?

I'm sure I've read somewhere that MNK gets them earlier than PUP, by at least a couple levels.

/MNK to 25 for Martial Arts (MNK gets it level 1), /WAR from 25+ onward.

I guess you could do /RNG from 25-30 for the Acc Bonus if you already have it leveled though too.

In my opinion, /WAR is superior to /MNK for PUP. I have both subjobs available and I never use /MNK. You just get far more out of /WAR. I could break it down for you JA vs. JA if you want, but I don't think you need me to do that. (Plus I'm at work and without looking it up I'm sure I'd forget something!)

I recently levelled DRG because I have heard so much about /DRG being at least as good as /WAR for PUP. I had fun with Jump and High Jump in my first PUP/DRG merit party but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to prove if it's really better than PUP/WAR or not.

I think the easiest thing to parse would be if I could convince a party to let me start out as PUP/DRG and then switch to PUP/WAR halfway. I suppose comparing parses against the same mobs on some basic stats like avg. melee dmg/acc, avg. ws dmg, etc. would be valid even if they were done in different parties, too.

Anyone have any other suggestions to compare /WAR to /DRG?

i think the whole idea behind /drg is a haste setup.. with the accuracy bonus you can sacrifice some of you acc gear for haste gear, wyvern earring gives you +5%.... swift belt(/ninurta's sash lol) + walahra turban is another 9% (11%)

looking at the wiki, doesnt look like pup gets any more haste gear (blitz ring? lol) ... which is too bad.. i believe the cap from gear is 25% and you wanna get as close to that as you can

i'd really like to see a pup with bahamut's hose though, they'd probably benefit more than a monk since monk gets af2 legs, and with the extra kicks / jumps.. i bet you can build tp pretty fast

its a shame SE fucked up on faith baghnakhs.. i mean pup can use all other baghnakhs, but they give them a weapon in which they dont have any skill in =/

they coulda made pup actually a decent DD that'd be accepted....

I have the Wyvern Earring and the Turban, 0/4 on Swift Belt though. So, that really only works out to 5% more than I could have as /WAR with my current gear... unless I'm at a camp where I'd be forced to wear my O Hat as /WAR but could manage wearing the Turban as /DRG (due to acc bonus).

I have full H2H merits plus Faith Torque, and with Sushi my accuracy as /WAR is very good. I want to say it was around 90% on non-Mamools but it's been a long time since I merited & parsed as PUP so my memory may be unclear. But if I'm already that high then I'm not sure about /DRG really helping with accuracy (unless I'm fighting Mamools or maybe Trolls).

From what I've read of other PUPs (like Toth) it doesn't sound like PUP/DRG can eat meat even against stuff like imps.

Jailer weapons are a moot point for PUP. Unless you can have an Animater equipped at the same time as virtue stones.

Barbarossa's Zerehs are nice, too. I use those, but also have Volunteer's Brais if I need accuracy. Same for Walahra Turban vs Optical Hat, and Swift Belt vs Life Belt. I always go /WAR, and use haste setup. If I notice my accuracy is suffering, then I'll swap a haste piece for accuracy until I'm satisfied with my hit rate. But with sushi, it's rarely a problem in merits anyway. I can't say for outside of merits, since I never bring my PUP to other events. That's what my other jobs are for.

And I usually end up meritting on RDM or WAR, anyways.

I need to find ways to use my PUP sometime...

WAR is basically the standard from 1-75. If you go with WAR you'll be fine.

MNK is good at points too. Early on, MNK can give you Martial Arts I. I used MNK from 30-50 as well because I had the Wrestler's Mantle and Cestus Belt. Without those items I'd just stick with WAR for Berserk.

Once I hit 50 though, I knew I had to go with Double Attack so I switched back. Also, you'll have more equipment available to replace the sub-MNK equipment.

Some people like DRG because of the extra Haste, Accuracy Bonus and Jumps, which they say replaces Double Attack. I just don't see such a small Haste boost being worth losing DA, Attack Bonus, and several slots to Haste gear that could have Acc/Attk gear in them.
I like Khamsin's idea better of mixing and matching Haste into a /WAR setup where you'll still have Berserk and DA.

    Cliffs Notes:
Level MNK to 25, use it if you have the sub-MNK items.
Level WAR to 37, it's useful from 1-75.

    Here's what I did:
    1-25 /MNK
    MA trait
    25-42? /DRG
fJump, and at 30 attack bonus, haste earring, and attack mantle. PUP base atk is relatively low, so I went for the job trait and /drg mantle full time attack boost over Berserk's +25% 3/5 of the time.
    42?-43 /MNK
I used the +5 h2h skill belt for 2 levels cause I was anxious to try out Raging Fists.
    44+ /WAR
I suppose I could've gone back to /DRG for a few levels, but my base attack was obviously quite a bit higher than it was at 30 and I knew I was definitely switching to /WAR at 50.
