    Penance question

    As a MNK, I'm curious if the Penance TP penalty of 25% is applied before or after subtle blow on a hit. With a max Subtle Blow build of 50%, I'm wondering if Penance will reduce that by another 25% or 25% of the 50% (12.5%) for a total of 62.5% or 75% reduction of TP.

    It is my understanding that Subtle Blow works like this:

    (BTP +3) * (1 - SB)

    So, in theory, the Penance should come afterwards:

    ((BTP + 3) * (1 - SB))*0.75

    However, if it was adjusted to come before subtle blow, that would change a lot of situations for me personally to be able to melee as a MNK.

    ((BTP + 3)*0.75) * (1 - SB)

    Has anyone tried to figure this out? I haven't merited Penance yet, as I am interested in the answer to this question, but I'd be happy to try it if no one (read: Aurik) knows.

    Multiplication is commutative, there is exactly no difference in the result between the 2 formulas you posted.

    BTP = 5
    SB = 0.5

    ((BTP + 3) * (1 - SB))*0.75

    ((5+3) * (1-0.5)) * 0.75
    ( 8 * 0.5 ) * 0.75
    4 * 0.75 = 3
    3

    ((BTP + 3)*0.75) * (1 - SB)
    ((5 + 3) * 0.75) * (1 - 0.5)
    ( 8 * 0.75) * 0.5
    6 * 0.5 = 3

    The formula you are actually trying to say here would be

    (BTP + 3) * (1 - (SB+0.25))

    In that case, the result per hit would be 2 (a total 75% reduction, as opposed to successive 50% and 25% for an effective 62.5%)

    The correct answer is that penance is applied separately from Subtle Blow, meaning attacks with capped SB with Penance on have a 62.5% reduction of TP given. That makes it slightly less effective than if is simply added .25 to your SB (assuming this extra amount was allowed to break the cap) but overall the difference isn't that big of an issue, it is still a great way to reduce enemy TP when it matters.

    You can powerlevel guard pretty easily with the help of Phalanx II and Minne (Minne optional really). My friend just got 75 MNK about a month ago and has 183 guard already from a couple hours of playing with mandragora in Boyhada Tree. Yes it's horribly slow to level if you only xp etc. but there are certainly ways around it.
