Anyone read this before?

It's a pretty old website so I figured that maybe other people have read this before/know anything extra about it, or even just have some comments.

I'm really curious as to what other people think about this sort of 'story' (more like a journal) I just read. It's rather long all together from start to finish, but worth it IMO if you have time to kill (about a 25-45m read?). At worst it's a very well written and interesting read.

Cavers find mysterious hole deep in a cave. They chip the hole open until one guy is able to crawl in. Guy sees something that freaks him out, they pull him out, but he is traumatized by what he experienced. Refuses to tell or acknowledge any details about what happened. Author goes in and sees some weird religious-type inscriptions and what appears to be an altar (?). Hears noise, gets chased out of the cave by something. Spends next few months slowly descending into paranoia and psychosis, hears and sees shadowmen-type creatures around his house (as a result of paranoia). Eventually meets up with the first guy and the two of them decide to go back to the cave in hope of curing their restlessness and curiousity of what is really there. No more updates follow past this point, 2 hours before they depart for the cave once more.

But again, it's worth reading in it's entirety if you have the time. A good deal of the details are left out in the summary.

As much as I was certain this was all fake and beefed up I just can't get over there seemingly being more real to it than I want to think (or at least to some extent). Obviously it's not completely fake because they provide a fair amount of pictures that couldn't really be shopped, nor do I really believe it has much fact to it past that. The story could've just as easily been spiced up since there's no real evidence of to the whole 'supernatural' aspect of the story.

Regardless, the end sort of freaked me out... Even though it the end was rather cliche.

But yeah, curious if anyone knows anything further about it or has any info/comments/whatever? I figure there has to be some other info on at least the journal since it's over 5 years old, but google failed me in my half-assed attempts.

The way it ends makes it seem so fake, not to mention how retarded it is to excavate anything inside a cave. Fun read at least, I doubt it it is real though.

I agree, the ending threw me off entirely. I was completely absorbed in it for most of the read, and then the last entry just seemed way out of place. But it still has a mysterious element that's bothering me... I can't believe I haven't found any other info on this.

Like, normally with 5 year old material on the internet someone would've researched it or spilled the beans on whether or not it was fake, or the real details behind the story, or someone else's experience, or someone going to the cave, or the real story, etc, would've been posted somewhere. I haven't found squat.

Although I'm not doubting the whole excavating part, the pictures were pretty convincing that they really were 'stupid enough to excavate in a cave.'

Btw for the record, I'm totally not a reading type; I just don't do enjoy it very much. I haven't read more than like 1/3rd of a book since middle school. So if I can do it anyone can!

EDIT: Getting better results on google but it's mostly all speculation and interpretations, still no real knowledge about it.

EDIT2: Finally got something. Mostly a lot of people not knowing how to interpret it, however this story is apparently somewhat similar to a book published in the 1980s by a spelunker. But, the photos provided on that site still raise odd questions. ::shrug::

It was a good read for sure, though a lot of it seemed a bit... over exaggerated. It sounds like part of it was true (due to the pictures, and the massive amount of detail put into the excavation itself), but that maybe they didn't find anything on the other side so they just decided to make a fun story out of it.

Parts seemed very real, but then other parts just seemed so fake and made up near the end. I have an active imagination though so I was still able to get into it, heh, but yeah dissapointing ending for sure.

Keep up the research on whether or not there is more to this! haha

In reality, "Ted" is actually "Fred," and his story is a short story written by Thomas Lera in 1987. He chose 2001 as a date because it was not too distant in the future where technology or society might have changed significantly, but would also be far enough along to separate the story from reality. The "Ted the Caver" folks blatantly ripped off Lera's work and portrayed it as a true story, even going so far as to take eerily accurate pictures to further the story. "Ted" never went caving, and his story isn't true. Read the story below, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The overall mood, and especially the pictures that they took, really helped me visualize it in my mind, so I definatly got a bit creeped out just sitting at work reading it. A lot of the tension, build up, and weirdnesses were nice, but it would have been cool if he had gone down that side cave near the end... hehe.

I kind of liked the end. It leaves your imagination free to decide for yourself why he never updated the site. Eaten by demons? Panic and fell to his death? Driven mad with his own delusions? Who knows....

I also found a PDIF document containing the entire real story by Thomas Lera. It was about 2x pages and written almost exactly the same word for word from what I saw skimming through it, minus a few minor changes that made Ted's story seem more realistic. The book spun off later in the story into a more sci-fi approach. Including that altar having skeletons, and actually having the 'entity' that chased them out of the tunnel be a real evil presense that later was said to devoure a farmer's wife/child.

It continues past where it was left off by 'Ted' though, and finished the story. Although I think I liked the cliff hanger ending better, it got a little too unrealistic after.

I saved it to my PC but not sure where I can upload it, if I find the link again I'll post it here if anyone wants to read it.
