    PS2 and new HDD

So my PS2 broke. Discdrive is kinda messed up, but it should work for a few hours.
And HDD kinda broke, it only updates 1-10 files and then I get an error, so from the past ~1400 I still have after 2 weeks 1000 to update >.<

    My questions are :

Can I use any new HDD for my "old" PS2? Anyone has experience with it?
I also got an american SLIM PS2 but that doesnt support HDD.

I know the american game works on american PS3.
Since the PS3 is codefree, it should be possible to install the US PS2 FF XI on a german PS3 , no?

Thanks if anyone knows about it, I couldnt get someone from the Service Center yet and I doubt
they know if US PS2 FF XI works on a german PS3 console.

If it's a brand new HDD then yes, you can use it in your old PS2. But, if the problem happens to be your PS2 and not necessarily your HDD, when you plug in that new HDD I *believe* it gets tagged and you will not be able to stick it into another PS2. So... I would be certain it's not your PS2 before I stuck a brand new HDD into it.

My brother tried to get another HDD for his PS2 and he got one off someone else and it he could not use it because of what I said above. Good luck. Hope I at least helped some.

    Buy the new console.

Today it's the HDD, tomorrow the laser, the next day the fan / power supply.

I play the game on PC, but for 2boxing ( I need it often for LS stuff ) PS2 is way easier.
So I think about buying a PS3 or/and a new HDD (if it works for sure).

False. All you need to do (to use a 'used/tagged' hdd in another PS2) is use the hdd utilities cd and format the HDD then reinstall all the software.

Right on. For 2 boxing I found just having two monitors to be cheaper and easier. Just Alt - Tab between windows.

I didn't know people on PS2 still played :O, I joke. In all honesty I used a PS2 till I purchased my most recent PC which is the jesus of beefyness, and allows me to play FFXI in 20in of widescreen glory. I second what...(forgot the name)...said, if you need to 2box just dual window it on 2 monitors, it's way easier. Or just open up 2 windower windows and run two games.

Exactly my point. If you have the PC/processing power to support two seperate instances of the game running on one machine, just buy another monitor and put the second instance on the second monitor. It's probably the cheapest alternative.

Other option is to buy the PS3. I mean if you're going to use the PS3 to 2box and play PS3 games on other then FFXI I think it's worth it but if you're just looking to 2box, I wouldn't buy a PS3 just for that. You could get a nice 200-250$ monitor rather then paying 499/599$ for the PS3.

But but PS3 is a BD Player for the future too ;; and I can play US PS3 games :D.
I could possibly trio box too, cancel my job and live for the rest of my life in an online world .

I think I try the HDD for PS2 first.

From my experience, only the two Sony 40gb drives will work for FFXI (or the two Maxtor drives they're based off of). The POL install or Sony HDD PS2 utlilities will not recognize any 'ole drive you through in there.

The PS3 is only region free for PS3 games afaik, PS1/2 games are still region locked.

And if you go for a PS3, get a USA (or JP) version anyway. It ends up being cheaper (hurray for a shitty dollar) if you purchase it from a site like videogamesplus.ca than buying a European PS3. And the EU price of 600 euro is already retarded when you consider that it doesn't have the PS2's emotion engine in it and uses a software emulator instead (meaning it's less backwards compatible, like the 360).

US PS3 is not really cheap for me, with the current Dollar it is like 460€ and there are still some smaller costs and you will most likely pay Tax.
So let´s say it would be lucky and only 500€. Problem : Guarantee is bad to handle (send back to USA ect).

In germany with the discounts I get, a PS3 costs me only 540€ maximum ( at least 10%, but more like 460 €cause of 20% discount)
Bonus : Guarantee for 2 years.
Thing is I don´t have a reason till today to buy a PS3. Nothing out I am interested in except Virtua Tennis 3. But I don´t have the time for other games....
I still have too many sealed games here (which I will never play>.<).

Anyway unless I fly to america soon I won´t buy an US PS3.

Are you sure PS2 US Games don´t work on an EU PS3?. Is there anything official from Sony?
If it doesn´t then PS3 is not going to see my room soon .

@Odd : I think it would be too much trouble to work a way out to pay for the HDD or/and to send it to me, and it might not work, but thank you =).

Yup, my ps2 stoped reading discs when ToA came out so I had to put my HDD into another ps2 to install ToA. You have to re-format the HDD and reinstall FFXI when you put the HDD into a new ps2.

    Re: PS2 and new HDD

Well if you can get a EU PS3 for 540 it isn't much of a benefit besides that emotion engine chip to import a USA version then. Afaik videogamesplus' PS3's usually manage to skip customs, mine did too, so tax wouldn't be an issue.

As for PAL PS2 discs not working on a USA console, yeah don't work. Since I can't find info from an official Sony source I could give you a pic of my USA PS3 trying to play GT3 (PAL): "This disc cannot be started due to region restrictions."
